Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who
Time Lord, gentleman, please!

Matt Smiht, Doctor Who

We might have seen the Doctor’s tomb in recent episode The Name Of The Doctor, but now we really know when the fall of the Eleventh will happen: Matt Smith is set to leave Doctor Who during the Christmas special this year.

The BBC has announced that Smith, who has played the iconic Timelord since New Year’s Day 2010, will be hanging up his bow tie (which is cool) and heading out to devote more time to his burgeoning film career, which includes working on Ryan Gosling’s How to Catch A Monster.

"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show,” Smith said in a statement released by the Beeb. "I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience. Many of them have become good friends and I'm incredibly proud of what we have achieved over the last four years.”

"Every day, on every episode, in every set of rushes, Matt Smith surprised me. The way he'd turn a line, or spin on his heels, or make something funny, or out of nowhere make me cry – I just never knew what was coming next,” said show boss Stephen Moffat "The Doctor can be clown and hero – often at the same time – and Matt rose to both challenges magnificently. And even better than that, given the pressures of this extraordinary show, he is one of the nicest and hardest-working people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Whatever we threw at him – sometimes literally – his behaviour was always worthy of the Doctor.”

Now, of course, comes the task of replacing the central character, and of finding someone to play the 12th Doctor (assuming he is still the 12th, what with all the – spoiler alert! – chatter around John Hurt). "Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor," Moffat, who has been hinting that he himself may move on sooner rather than later, said. "A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again. After 50 years, that's still so exciting." If you're feeling nostalgic, you can listen to our chat with Matt on the podcast here. And tell us who you think the next Doctor will be in the comments and on that wibbly-wobbly twittery-wittery thing, but here are some suggestions to get you started...

Who should be the new Doctor?
Fringe's John Noble
Gillian Anderson
Patterson Joseph
Daniel Kaluuya
Robert Pattinson
Richard Coyle
Michael Smiley
Bill Nighy
Jason Isaacs
Orphan Black's Tatiana Maslany

Can't be a woman
gender is much more damaging to iconic characters - other factors are flexible in my opinion - age, race etc. But Dr Who, like James Bond, is male, you mess with the gender you lose an integral part of what makes the character work. More

Idris Elba

L: Nicky C Swapping a white guy for yet another white guy after decades of white guys is not a change at all, real or otherwise. NAOMIE HARRIS is who you want! That's what I call a change! eah, except sufficient argument for why a female Dr Who wouldn't work has been provided. Are you actually paying attention to this thread? More

Time for a REAL change.
EDDIE MARSAN! He would be perfect, while I've loved Matt Smith and Tennant wasn't too bad - just a bit too OTT at times - I think somebody a bit more straight-laced would be a good change. More

Given they always go for relative unknowns, which has worked for tennant and smith it's a shame that another name won't be mentioned (or certinaly hasn't been so far). Benedict Cumberbatch anyone? Ace as Shelock and would suit the role to a tee, however I feel that it would play to simillar to his sherlock and wouldn't be as great. More

Matthew Baynton for time lord. My daughter suggested this at the dinner table yesterday and she is so on the money. If you don't know who he is then switch on Horrible Histories or have a listen to Special Benny. He's the tall thin guy who does Charles the 2nd. More

Who's the next Who?
My vote would be for Tom Ward (him of Silent Witness fame), he has a bit of 'Who' mystery about him. Thing is, the BBC will want to go for someone with some longevity as the Timelords are only mean't to have 13 lives, so I guess that would rule out the likes of Jason Isaacs etc - unless they come up with some time-y whime-y, wibbly, wobbly bobbins to explain this away! RE: Matt Smith Leaving Doctor Who
L: elab49 Becquse there is nothing I'm aware of that says an individual Timelord can change gender. It's a bit like demanding the next James Bond should be female - it'd be stunt casting of the worst sort. t was covered in the Neil Gaiman episode in series 6, where the Doctor tells Rory and Amy about his friend, the Corsair ren't! No Time Lords left anywhere in the Universe. But the Universe isn't where we're going. {he tosses it to Amy} See that snake. The mark of The Corsair. Fan More

Goodbye Matt!
Sad to see Matt go, he has been brilliant in the role of the Doctor. Having met him a couple of times I can also say he is a very nice chap and I wish him well in his future roles. Watched him in the BBC dramas Christopher & His Kind and Bert & Dickie which showed how versatile he is. Am sure he will have loads of starring roles in the years ahead. More

Whishaw
As much as I think Jason Isaacs would be great, he would probably be a better fit as the master. As would Damian Lewis. Why can't we have Tom Hardy as the doctor? Would be freaking epic huge fan of his. Ben Whishaw aka Q from skyfall would fit the part of the doctor. He's young, smart and of course women will fancy him. But please Moffatt if you screw this up by hiring a woman, never come near a tv show ever again. More
