New Pacific Rim Stills - And Del Toro Speaks!
Update: now with a new featurette

Update: Here's the latest featurette on Pacific Rim's production, wherein Guillermo del Toro discusses the practical effects involved in bringing the Jaegers to life, and admits that he built a torture device for his actors. While chuckling happily, the monster!

...

He may still be finishing work on Pacific Rim, but given that Guillermo del Toro is known for his multitasking, we knew that if we asked him to write a piece for the July issue of Empire magazine, he'd be able to deliver. And so it proved! As well as some exclusive pictures from the film, including the two below, del Toro wrote us an intensely personal piece on his lifelong love of monsters. Here's a little taste.

"There was something weird about me from the beginning. I don't know exactly when I started loving monsters so much, but it was definitely early. When I was 4 or 5 years old, I would ask my mother, 'Can I sleep in the coffin tonight?' and I would lie down in a drawer or I would sleep in a toy box. There's even a recording of me, aged three or four, asking for a mandrake root, for Christmas, to use in magic rituals."

He also talked about his approach to Pacific Rim itself and the fight scene shown in one of these images. "In creating Pacific Rim, I wanted the fights to have structure, like the wrestling matches of my childhood, so each fight brings a very different kind of aesthetic and a different dynamic. The first fight is very operatic, theatrical: Wagnerian. It happens in the middle of an iceberg-strewn sea, in the middle of a storm, with huge waves crashing on the Jaeger and Kaiju. We worked really hard at making water a character in this movie, frequently referring to Hokusai or the Fuji wave, and trying to make the water enhanced and add to the drama. This fight tries to quote the majesty of a painting by Goya called the Colossus."

There's a lot more from del Toro as well as his cast Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Burn Gorman in the new issue of Empire, which is on sale on Thursday in all good news agents, on the iPad and the US iPad.

RE: This is definitely starting to look pretty cool...
I like Del Toro, I absolutely love Pan's and Hellboy II, but I'm hoping this isn't too 'Transformers-y' for lack of a better term. I'm sure he can handle something like this well enough though, especially considering his love for the genre. More

Hellboy 2 was a dog of a movie, Del Toro is a bit iffy in my book. Interesting to see whether the audience takes to the concept of this movie in the required numbers, personally I can see this bombing. More

L: albumental ...but (and I know I'm in the minority here so flame on) I do find Del Toro's movies to be somewhat spectacle over substance, or plot cohesion, or narrative flow. We'll see. air comment, although I'm not too sure how much a "Robots vs. Aliens" movie requires, in terms of plot! 😉 More
