Another day, another Iron Man 3 armour suit design unlocked over at the film’s Facebook page. This time, it’s the Mark 39 sub-orbital design, which had been Billy no-mates when it first arrived online but has now been joined by the Mark 35 Disaster Rescue armour. See them both below.
Its title may not have a cool origin story like yesterday’s Heartbreaker, which was named after co-writer Drew Pearce’s favourite Rolling Stones song, but from the sounds of its name – “Gemini” – the high altitude-capable suit appears to draw some inspiration from the space race. Which is intriguing, given that Robert Downey Jr. has traditionally had issues with altitude. You’ll remember the icing issues that plagued the Mark II and his near-fatal trip through the portal above New York in Avengers Assemble. Now the Gemini boasts the gold and white of Tony’s space-capable armour (at least for short periods), which allows all sorts of fun speculation as where he might be off to. Especially since the Marvel Phase Two era is focusing more on off-world adventures. Still, the presence of a space suit alone doesn’t mean it’ll happen just yet.
As for "Red Snapper"? We're gonna guess that Shane and Drew just really felt like fish that day. Wonder if it was at craft services... Still, that's a beefy-looking armour, ready to deal with anything.
Tony will need both in Iron Man 3, with our witty genius hero under threat from Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin and worried for those he cares about. Specifically, Gwyneth Paltrow’s Pepper Potts and Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes.
The movie, co-written and directed by Shane Black will arrive in our cinemas on April 25.
