McAvoy On X-Men: Days Of Future Past
He won't share the screen with Stewart

27 February 2013  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Empire

In this month's Empire - the one with Ol' Shell Head on the front, out Thursday February 28 - there are three big interviews, one with Danny Boyle, another with Trey Parker and Matt Stone and the other - as you may have guessed - with James McAvoy. In it, the young Professor X talks about everything from Mr. Tumnus to his latest, the Boyle-directed Trance, as well as a little bit on the upcoming X-Men: Days Of Future Past.

First a bit of background. Now Bryan Singer is reuniting the casts of both the original trilogy and Matthew Vaughn's X-Men: First Class, will certain characters get to share screentime with themselves? You know, with this being a timey-wimey-bendy-wendy sort of a story?

From the looks of things, the answer is no, from James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart's points of view, anyway: "[X-Men: Days Of Future Past] will be cool, but I don't think [Patrick Stewart and I] get any scenes together, sadly," says McAvoy. "I don't think there's any future self talking to past self."

Though that'll disappoint many, this makes sense if you've read the original run of comics the film is based on, as the two/one mind reader(s) doesn't/don't talk (to himself) in that either, and the time travel is more a matter of mental transference from an older character to her younger counterpart (in that case, Kitty Pryde). With that in mind, there's still plenty to look forward to - especially considering Singer has recently said this to Empire about the film's relation to the comics:

"What you’ll see is a movie that’s very much ‘inspired by’ that story – one that has some elements directly from it as well as some of our own elements that we’re bringing to it – but it’ll definitely be in the spirit of that story. It’s going to be pretty epic, I can tell you."

X-Men: Days Of Future Past will be out on July 18, 2014. Trance, meanwhile, is out a smidge sooner on March 27.

Your Comments

Time travel is a tricky plot to explore, so it makes sense that not all of the characters will get to experience it in this movie. I am interested to see how the two Professor Xavier’s respective stories go, and to prepare, I have been watching the X-Men films using my DISH Anywhere app. My app streams my On Demand movies to my tablet, which helps with how much I travel for my job at DISH. Watching the X-Men movies has helped prepare for what’s coming for everyone in Days, and not to More

Trance
I know this article isn't about Trance, but you published the trailer, so my comment is in regards to it, because it is SO amazing when a wonderful director and one of the greatest and most underrated actors get together. It's one of those cinema bliss' moments. Just brilliant. More
