Shane Acker Adopts Beasts Of Burden
The Dark Horse comic adaptation

Though it was picked up back in 2011 for Shrek/Narnia man Andrew Adamson to produce via his company, the adaptation of Dark Horse Comics’ tale Beasts Of Burden has faced a typically slow slog through development. Things are looking a little more hopeful now, however, as 9 director Shane Acker is now on board to direct the movie.

Created by Evan Dorkin and Jill Thompson for Dark Horse’s Book Of Hauntings, Witchcraft, The Dead And Monsters, the story takes place in the small community of Burden Hill, wracked with supernatural weirdness.

Things get so strange that a group of dogs and a cat band together to investigate what’s happening, in order to keep their human friends safe and, presumably, to pee on a ghost or two. Jack The Giant Killer’s Darren Lemke is currently at work on the film version, which doesn’t have a name for now.

Acker, who made his name when he adapted 9 from an eye-catching short into a feature film, has mostly been filling his time since then working as an animation supervisor, story artist and pre-vis man on other movies, including Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the Total Recall remake and this year’s 47 Ronin. But he’s also attached to direct other movies, including sub ‘toon Deep and a new take on Thomas The Tank Engine. From the sounds of it, however, it appears the Beasts film will jump to the head of the queue.
