Standalone Star Wars Films Confirmed
Lawrence Kasdan & Simon Kinberg involved

06 February 2013  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Variety

Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back, Yoda

So it’s goodbye Rumour Alert and hello to Confirmation Klaxon. You might recall that, back in November, word began to surface that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg were rumoured to be on to write the second and third new Star Wars films (with Michael Arndt already working on the first for JJ Abrams to direct). Well, it appears that they won’t be doing that, but they will be working on stand-alone films set within the Star Wars universe.

"We are in fact working on a few stand-alone films," Disney boss Bob Iger told CNBC's Julia Boorstin (via Variety). "Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga. So we plan to make Star Wars VII, VIII and IX over roughly a six-year period of time starting in 2015. But there are going to be a few other films released in that period of time too."

Kasdan won’t just be spearheading his own project: he’s also apparently consulting with Abrams on Episode VII. Which, given his sterling work writing The Empire Strikes Back and, perhaps to a lesser degree, Return Of The Jedi, must surely be A Good Thing.

Yesterday, Ain’t It Cool News heard that one of the films might focus on diminutive Jedi master Yoda, who certainly seems a likely candidate given his fan following. The question is how ready are we for a film with a main character whose grammatical rules are that different? Also, does he count as a character who is "not part of the overall saga"?

Naturally, the Mouse House is keeping other details quiet, since it’s early days in development. But it certainly sounds like it wants to get as much value as it can out of that $4 billion Lucasfilm purchase. These are interesting times to be a Star Wars fan...

Which character do you want to see get their own Star Wars adventure?
Focus must be on Yoda
Han Solo & Chewie's early days!

Comparing Boba fett with Mr. Corleone is the most ludicrous nonsense. Fett is a pretty sad character who essentially is a complete non-entity, is quite crap at fighting and has somehow been promoted to an important character when he is quite clearly interchangable with every other bounty hunter in "Empire". How many lines does he even have in episodes five and six anyway? He finishes Jedi as a quick joke, falling rather craply into that dumb worm thingy. More

RE: BOBA FETT
I agree. That would be a very good idea. None of the old characters, please. Boba Fett's backstory should never be revealed in my opinion (although people probably said the same about Vito Corleone before Godfather Part II). The idea of Han and Chewie's other adventures isn't too bad, except for the fact that nobody, but nobody, can replace Harrison Ford. So I quite like the idea of a story like the one you propose although it might not be as fun as the original movies. More

He doesn't talk like that
Any one who watches Empire properly can see that Yoda only talks in the odd back-to-front way when he is pretending not to be a Jedi master. Once revealed he pretty much talks like a normal bloke. Then of course we get Return in which he says little anyway before shuffleing off this mortal coil. All that rediculous back to front stuff only really comes with episode one and those films are complete garbage. Yoda's dialogue falls over itself backwards trying to be "Yoderish". George Luc More

The Old Republic
Rather than things we know about what about the things we have heard talked about but that's it, the Old Republic, a more civilised age. There are tons of books to follow, Darth Plageus would be good while episode 1-3 are fresh. Or why not look into Darth Bane which will then tell us about the rule of two? I'm all for going back to the beginning with the Old Republic. New characters and lots about the history and science of the Force, which lets be fair is what we want from Star Wars. More

You KNOW it's got to be BOBA!
Turn Boba Fett into an anti-hero and put us in the world of the Hutts and the smugglers with Boba doing the 'best of a bad bunch' Clint Eastwood/Toshiro Mifune thing. In fact, if they could somehow base it on stories like Yojimbo that would make me weak at the knees. Please, please don't make the story about a Jedi. We need a Jedi-less Star Wars movie to really expand it. More
