New Pain & Gain Still Online
See The Rock run!

30 January 2013  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Exclusive

Michael Bay's making a smaller, more personal film with Pain & Gain - so while there's still at least one explosion, there are no giant robots and hardly any aircraft carriers. It does, however, feature Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, and we have an exclusive new pic of the latter below, taken from the new issue of Empire.

The story is based on this amazing true-life tale, about a bodybuilding gang who decided to dabble in extortion but ended up a little over their steroided-up heads. "There were a lot of steroids," says Bay. "That's really the whole metaphor for this whole movie. It's about people who just aren't happy with what they've got. It's 'If I was just a little bit bigger.' or 'If I was just a bit richer, I'd be happy.'"

There's more from Bay in our On Location set report in the new issue of Empire, on sale tomorrow. The film also stars Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Anthony Mackie, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson and Ken Jeong. And don't worry: he confirms that there are helicopters on the screen, so this is still a Michael Bay movie even if its budget is a mere $23m. "Ish", as he puts it.
