Still From Tom Cruise's Oblivion Lands
Running away from something? You bet

21 January 2013  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Universal Pictures

Tom Cruise has long had a reputation for running away from things on screen - click here for more details - and from the looks of this new still from Joseph 'Tron: Legacy' Kosinski's Oblivion, nothing's changing on that front any time soon.

If you've seen the impressive trailer for the apocalyptic sci-fi, you'll know that Kosinski's lost none of the visual future-world flair seen in the Tron sequel, and this snap of Mr. Cruise's helicopter-thingamajig-ma-wotsit is more proof of just that.

Oblivion takes place on a future Earth that has been ruined by years of war with an alien race. Though mankind won the conflict, the cost was half the planet’s surface. Humans have been evacuated to floating cities in the clouds and now roving drones track down the last of the alien scourge and keep the place secure.

We join Cruise as Jack Harper, a man stationed on Earth whose job it is to repair the drones. His link to the rest of the human race is Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) who he talks to via radio. They’ve got two more weeks before Jack’s punishment sentence is up and they can join the others in the sky.

But then Jack discovers something while hunting an alien survivor – not just a group of humans living underneath the surface, but also a woman (Olga Kurylenko) in a crashed spaceship who has a link to Jack’s past. And then dark secrets begin to emerge…

With Morgan Freeman and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau also in the cast, Oblivion will strike our screens on April 12.
