Laeta Kalogridis Writing New Terminator
With Patrick Lussier

18 January 2013  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

Terminator 2: Judgment Day

The Terminator franchise, which has been dormant onscreen since 2009’s Salvation, has nevertheless been clanking away in development. Annapurna Pictures’ Megan Ellison paid a fortune for the rights a few years ago, and has since teamed up with brother David’s Skydance Pictures. Now Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier have been hired to write a script for the next instalment.

Kalogridis’ name is familiar to fans of Terminator godfather James Cameron because she worked on the script and produced the first Avatar. She also wrote and produced Scorsese's Shutter Island and scripted Alexander for Oliver Stone.

Interestingly, she also has a “Special Thanks” credit on a little film called Dracula 2000, directed by one Patrick Lussier. He’s also been behind such films as Drive Angry, My Bloody Valentine and White Noise 2: The Light. David Ellison hired the pair to write something else that’s sci-fi flavoured based on an original idea, but from the sounds of it, a new Terminator film will be their focus.

Megan Ellison is known as the deep-pocketed backer of indie fare such as Zero Dark Thirty and The Master, while David has ties to movies including Jack Reacher and this year’s Star Trek sequel, Into Darkness. It’ll be interesting to see what results from the two collaborating, especially with something as popular as the Terminator series.

Arnold Not Playing A T-800 In New Terminator?
On IMDb, it says it's "rumored" that Arnold Schwarzenegger will be playing a T-1000 in Terminator 5 (that's a liquid metal Terminator for those of you that don't know). I haven't heard that mentioned anywhere. That's something he hasn't done before, could be interesting. More

2029 Or Bust
Fans have been hoping for a movie set entirely in 2029 with the future war and mankind's final victory over Skynet. In the Terminator books, there's a really good bit where the Terminators all freeze because the Skynet central computer has been destroyed by the victorious rebels. I'd also like to see more of the extermination camps that Michael Biehn mentioned in Terminator 1 but I think the investment people want a kiddie-friendly rating to make more money, so we'll probably never see the full More

War against the machines
I would really love to see the Skynet system gaining awareness and the battle between humans and the machines. We have only ever had snippets of this in the movies and I for one would love to see John Connor commanding his troops, sending Kyle back and then the resulting destruction of Skynet after all the past events have been re written More

Can't help but get my hopes up...
... because Terminator is so cool, despite the quality of the non-Cameron films. 3 was a star vehicle for Arnie and 4 was so very nearly good, but it didn't seem to know what or even who it was about. The best director in the world can't make a poor script interesting. With a strong, compact story any Terminator movie could be brilliant, but my personal choice would be for it to be aimed at adults. We need more grown-up genre movies. More
