He may not have scored an Oscar nomination for Best Director, but Ben Affleck was king of the Golden Globes last night as he won for directing Argo and the movie itself scored Best Drama at the award ceremony. The winners elsewhere were more predictable, with Les Miserables taking home Best Comedy Or Musical, plus awards for Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway. Daniel Day-Lewis nabbed a trophy for Lincoln; Amour won Best Foreign Language Film and a shocked Adele awarded Best Original Song for Skyfall. In the TV section, it was another good night for Homeland, which got Best Drama Series with gongs for Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. Lena Dunham won with Girls, and Sarah Palin TV movie Game Change, which took best Miniseries Or Movie, saw Julianne Moore and Ed Harris both winning awards for their roles. The event, now in its 70th year with awards handed out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, was a much less controversial affair without Ricky Gervais hosting. But Tina Fey and Amy Poehler pulled off a light, funny, sometimes subversive job – including fake nominees, cooing with George Clooney and letting Sacha Baron Cohen make offensive references in his speech presenting Best Animation Feature, which included him taking pot-shots at his co-stars. “Russell Crowe had four months of singing lessons,” he said, before adding sarcastically, “that was money well spent…” Other notable events included Jodie Foster’s emotional acceptance of the Cecile B De Mille award, in which she essentially confirmed Hollywood’s most open secret about her personal life, and Bill Clinton arriving on stage to introduce Lincoln (Poehler announced him as "Hillary Clinton's husband!"). Oh, the power of former Empire guest editor Steven Spielberg...
