Tim Bevan On Tom Hooper's Oscar Snub
Producer on Les Misérables' eight nods

10 January 2013  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen  |  Source: Exclusive

Les Miserables

The Oscar nominations are in and Blighty’s own Working Title has two horses in the race. One, Les Misérables, is out in front with eight nominations, although Anna Karenina’s four nods was hugely pleasing for the studio, too.

One disappointment, in an otherwise auspicious year, was the absence of Tom Hooper’s name from the Best Director shortlist. “It was a bit of a surprise that he didn’t get nominated”, Tim Bevan, the studio’s co-head told Empire, “but he’s in good company with Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow. It’s always weird when you get multiple nominations on a movie and the director doesn’t get recognised. You think wait a second if it wasn’t for him/her, none of these others would have done their job. The live singing and the accomplishment of pulling together such a gnarly beast, to be honest.”

Consolation came in eight other categories, including Best Picture – “That’s a big deal,” Bevan said, “it’s only happened three or four times for us, so it’s fantastic" – and Best Actor for Hugh Jackman. He’s not prepared to go on record with tips, though. “I don’t think there is a frontrunner. One feels that Anne [Hathaway] may be a frontrunner for Best Supporting Actress, but maybe not. It’s all over the map.”

Find out on Oscar night, February 24, or catch Les Misérables in your local odeon from tomorrow. Click here for Empire's review.

RE: Are you fibbing, Tristam?
Screw Tom Hooper. He stole Fincher's statuette when he won for The King's Speech in 2010, despite being the worst director in the entire category that year. He certainly doesn't deserve another. More

Are you fibbing, Tristam?
Just to pull you up on that brazen lie, exactly how many reviews did you have to read before you 'lost count'? What was the tally before it all became a blur? This is all an obvious falsehood. Also, you confess to be able to look into alternate futures as well ... you say that there would have been a HUGE backlash? You cannot possibly qualify that. A quick look at Rotten Tomatoes shows that the film has a critics rating of 70% and an audience opinion of 84% Tell me Tristam, how can a director ac More

RE: Why is this a shock
"flash in the pan mediocrity like Hooper" What planet are you on?! To go from King's Speech to Les Mis in four years and make critical and commercial successes of both is frankly astonishing. Les Mis is notoriously difficult to direct on stage, let alone on celluloid, but Hooper did it, and did it well enough to get 8 Oscar noms out of it. More

Why is this a shock?
I've lost count of the amount of reviews of Les Mis that have labelled Tom Hooper as "inept". Even positive reviews have singled him out as the films biggest flaw. Why are we surprised at his omission? Because he asserted himself as a candidate? Had he been nominated, the backlash would have been HUGE. I applaud the Academy for nominating the genius Haneke over a flash-in-the-pan mediocrity like Hooper. More
