Two New Gatsby Character Posters
Update: Maguire and Debicki take a bow

19 December 2012  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen  |  Source: Coming Soon

UPDATE: Warner Bros. have added Tobey Maguire's Nick Carraway, looking tres dapper in a three-piece tweed, and Australian newcomer Elizabeth Debicki as Jordan Baker to the gallery of striking character banners. Carraway will be our entry point into the hyper-affluent world of Jay Gatsby's West Egg. Hang him upside down and, presto, he's 1920s Spider-Man.

New character banners for The Great Gatsby have come to light online and offer a closer look at two of the movie's key characters. When not living their regular lives, Joel Edgerton's Tom Buchanan and his mistress, Isla Fisher's Myrtle Wilson, flit between New York parties and surreptitious liaisons. Click on the images below for a closer look.

After bringing his unique visual touch to Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, Baz Lurhmann's next literary extravaganza promises even greater challenges. After all, it's not an easy story to adapt. Despite the presence of Robert Redford, Jack Clayton's 1974 version of The Great Gatsby mislaid the magic of F. Scott Fitzgerald's prose somewhere down a dusty cinematic cul-de-sac.

Dusty is one thing Luhrmann's take definitely won't be. This time, of course, Leonardo DiCaprio takes the titular lead with Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. And for sheer vibrancy and spectacle, the movie's first trailer (below) takes some matching. These posters have plenty of fizz, too. Purists worried that the richness of the writing will get lost amid the razzle-dazzle should be reassured by the presence of Fitzgerald's own words.

Pedants like us will be more disappointed by the absence of an exclamation mark as on Moulin Rouge!. Presumably it went off to work on The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists.

The Great Gatsby lands with us on May 17. Prepare your flapper dresses and champagne saucers for the '20s re-revival.

Still looking forward to this ...
Personally I think the razzle-dazzle is one of the things that will get me into the theatre to see this. I'm well up for it! More
