Into Darkness Teaser Footage Screened
Empire sees new Trek scenes

10 December 2012  |  Written by James White

We’ve already had the first trailer arrive for Star Trek Into Darkness (you can watch that above), but last night J.J. Abrams introduced the teaser footage that will run in IMAX before The Hobbit to a select gathering of press in Los Angeles. While we’re under strict Abrams orders not to reveal too much, we can say this: damned impressive.

Among the things you can expect to sample are the first looks at Noel Clarke and Nazneen Contractor, and small sliver of a certain Mr Cumberbatch (and some clues as to how he fits into the Trek universe, but no big reveal) and then a hectic romp with the crew as we meet them in the middle of action on a class-M planet.

If you’ve seen the promo, then you might expect that you’ve seen things from all through the film. But barring one or two moments, we can tell you that crafty old JJ has pulled off something quite clever. There’s even a link to one of the original Trek universe’s most memorable lines of dialogue.

But prepare for some chasing, some jumping, some banter and a quite wonderful reaction shot from Simon Pegg as Scotty.

Before the footage screened, Abrams said that while he did intend the movie to be intense and gloomy in places, he also wanted it to be fun. And all are present and correct in this first real look at the movie.

The nine minutes from the start of the film will be screened before IMAX presentations of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey from December 13. You’ll want to see more when this thing finishes. But we’ll have to wait until May 17 next year to get a look at the whole thing. If you're still in a speculatin' mood, check out 10 Things We Learned From The Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Trailer.

My prediction
"crafty old JJ has done something quite clever"... I reckon the trailer is a red herring. It'll all be footage from the films intro / intro to the bad guy or it's another simulation like the kobayashi maru. That's what I think. More

Will this be on the internet at any time before the film release? No IMAX anywhere near me :( More

So the first 9 minutes STILL doesn't reveal.....
...who the hell Benedict C plays...Most other (geek) websites state that it's not Khan. To save me spoiling it for others, there are sites out there that give a full breakdown of those 9 minutes. Looking forward to seeing 'The Hobbit' in IMAX this weekend for two reasons.... More
