Skyfall Is The UK's Biggest Film Ever
Bond breaks Avatar's £94 million record

05 December 2012  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Screen Daily

Skyfall

After the weekend's screenings, Skyfall was on the precipice of breaking Avatar's gargantuan £94 million UK box office record, with its return to Britain's number one spot helping it hit approximately £93.8 million.

Now, after more receipts have come in, the all-important 94 number has been reached, making Skyfall the biggest-selling movie in the history of British cinema. That precise number? £94,277,612. £94,277,612 in 40 days, no less, which is all the more staggering considering Avatar got to that number with the help of both inflated 3D ticket prices and an 11 month timespan.

In other words, as Kim Newman wrote in Empire's review, "One thing’s certain: James Bond will return…", making the pressure on screenwriter John Logan all the greater as he attempts two connected sequels for Bond 24 and 25.

Globally, Skyfall has earned around $870 million at the time of writing, trouncing the $599 million set by Casino Royale back in 2006 and the $591 million from Quantum Of Solace in 2008.

Vesper martinis all round then for EON, Danjaq and co., as their unique structure allows for the majority of profits to head in their direction rather than, say, Sony's.

Skyfall, as you may have guessed, is still on general release both in the UK and across the globe. For our extensive coverage on the film, be sure to have a listen to the Purvis and Wade writers' podcast as well as our spoiler special

Not quite Casino
Nice to see this film overtake Avertar, but I was dissapointed with the fim overall, which is strange because all the essential ingredients were there, it just wasn't mixed to my liking. Casino Royal was a good deal better and for me is even better than Goldfinger, just. I would love to see a remake of OHMSS with Daniel Craig, stunning backdrops, Blofeld, real stunt work potential and a great score. More

L: Cool Breeze Havnt seen it myself but it looks like despite no matter how bad a movie is, as long as you have an established brand name and sufficent hype and advertising, a movie can make loads at the box office. ell, you can't say that though, can you? You can't say it's a bad film if you haven't seen it. Silly. More

No no, box office in no way reflects on a film's quality, unless it's the Star Wars prequels because they are the perfect perfection. More

This isn't hype it's repeat business and and good word of mouth. No amount of marketing money can buy that. People like e it is in short A Fucking great film. Accept that More

Cool, you do realize that this has almost done almost 400 million more then QoS right? You don't simply get so much success by simply having a brand-name with Bond, otherwise it would have probably been QoS money it's getting. Some people liked it or liked it a lot. Oh and well done UK, you've finally redeemed yourself for Mamma Mia. More

Avatar knocked off it's perch!
As a Bond fan, of course I'm delighted with this news, but I'm more happy that the goddamn awful and overated Avatar is no longer at the top of this list. But glad to see a British hero at the top of the British all time chart, rather than a bunch of smurfs! More
