Pacific Rim Sequel Script Ordered
Travis Beacham is back on duty

05 December 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Idris Elba, Pacific Rim

We still have to wait until July to see everything that Guillermo del Toro is promising with his new, monsters-vs-robots action epic Pacific Rim. The viral campaign is under way and we’re hopeful the trailer will show up before long. But backers Legendary Pictures clearly think that he’s on to something, as the company is already kicking off preparatory work on the sequel by engaging Travis Beacham to write the script.

Beacham is the man who started it all with the initial treatment for Pacific Rim, which Legendary snapped up back in 2010. That led to del Toro taking an interest, and switching to make it his priority project once At The Mountains Of Madness fell through.

It’s not so shocking that work on the sequel is gearing up, especially given that Warner Bros. is distributing the film – the studio has regularly started to figure out follow-ups before the first (or in the case of The Hangover, second) film is out in the world. And let’s face it – do you bet against del Toro? (put your hand down, Universal, and go and think what you’ve done)

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, GDT will oversee the scriptwriting (because we all know he’s the master of multi-tasking). But as to whether he’ll return to the director’s chair for the film should it enter production? That’s a bigger question, especially since he’s just committed to making spook story Crimson Peak for Legendary as his next movie.

Still, having caught a glimpse of the monster mash madness at Comic-Con, we have a feeling people are going to want more Kaiju Vs Jaeger action when Rim’s credits roll.

Pacific Rim splashes down on July 12.

I have absolute faith in Del Toro, but I remember WB greenlit a sequel to Green Lantern prior to that film's release (because it's him though, I can overlook the WB concern). Still, with this in the can and Crimson Peak on the way Del Toro is putting out some blockbuster material and hopefully getting to make Mountains. If Prometheus showed studios one thing, it's that there is an audience appetite for adult scifi horror; so spending money on it is justified (that's just about the only positive More

This has to be good news...
I mean, if Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have given the go-ahead to write a script for a sequel, then it means that PACIFIC RIM is going to be brilliant. It's already one of the top films I'm looking forward to next year and I'm really glad that Guillermo Del Toro has finally directed a film after several missed attempts. Even if he doesn't direct the sequel, he can always oversee it as an executive producer or something. Anyway, I'm really excited seeing some Kaiju VS Jaeger action! More
