Star Trek Into Darkness Plot Synopsis
It's Chess, Jim, but not as we know it

Star Trek - JJ Abrams, Zachary Quinto

J.J. Abrams is not above teasing Star Trek fans, what with this three frame sneak peek at Spock in a fire retardant suit on Conan in October and the nine-minute IMAX preview set to play before certain screenings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey in December. But now that this official plot synopsis has landed, there are finally some concrete (albeit vague) facts to ponder.

Below is the synopsis for your delectation and appreciation note the more generic "explosive action thriller" language alongside the more intriguing "a war-zone world" and "one-man weapon of mass destruction" tidbits.

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organisation has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.”

A personal score, you say? Perhaps die-hard Trekkies will be able to join some (admittedly very distant) dots here to try and work out which Star Trek character would be able to get under Kirk's skin enough, but as ever, perhaps it's more fun to wait until it's officially confirmed.

Also, that "epic chess game of life and death" seems like a job for Spock as long as it's Tri-Dimensional Chess, of course, which would make sense now that Star Trek Into Darkness is actually in 3D.

The synopsis may say "Summer 2013", but the more precise release date for Star Trek Into Darkness is May 17, 2013.

RE:
As long as he isn't playing khan its fine. No offence to cumberbatch and his amazing acting skills but that is not a character that needs to be revisited. More

This is seriously the official statement from Paramount? Sounds like it was written by a teenager. How does one "detonate a fleet"? I wasn't aware fleets were explosive devices. (I've posted this elsewhere but it bears repeating) More

Gary Mitchell confirmed?
It seems talk of Gary Mitchell might be true, unless Karl Urban is trying to throw everyone off course, a double bluff perhaps? http://www.tgdaily.com/games-and-entertainm ent-features/64565-is-gary-mitchell-the-new-star-trek-2 -villain More

RE: I'm just wondering why no one has thought of it much before...
Gary Mitchell. Or Charlie X. I wonder, if the only family Kirk has remaining are his crew if this means George will be killed early doors. L: zeerem91 The synopsis has Gary Mitchell written all over it. More

If its a *personal* score to settle doesnt that just mean that something that kirk holds dear is compromised in the attack - he hasnt met any of the stuff (on screen) he has a long standing enmity against yet has he? Enjoyed the first movie but *still* cant really get excited by another run through with this cast - feels like it should have been a one off like all those other 60's TV show movies. Maybe this one will change my mind. More

FLASHMAN
I would now bet more than I earn (admittedly precious little) that this is a new alternative-universe spin on a Classic Trek Series 1 episode titled 'The Doomsday Machine'............anybody else see those Twitter photos (v-quickly taken back-off the Interweb) of Old Spock & Bill Shatner, beside the other pictures - presumably on the set of Film 2 - of New Spock fighting Sherlock Holmes????????????
