Arndt Wrote Star Wars Treatments
Update: He's signed to write Ep. VII!

10 November 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Vulture

Update: Disney and Lucasfilm have made it official, confirming Arndt as writing the script for at least the first of the new trilogy. In related news, another chunk of the George Lucas / Kathleen Kennedy discussion video is online and you can see that above.

The shocking and downright exhilarating news of Disney purchasing Lucasfilm and announcing new Star Wars adventures did not come as a surprise to everyone. Within the two companies, negotiations had been going on for months, and George Lucas even said that he’d written outlines for at least three more films. Now there's a report on who has turned them into a treatment for Star Wars: Episode VII and beyond: Toy Story 3’s Michael Arndt.

Vulture, which is currently in the market for a place to unload the bodies of many Bothan spies, brings word that Arndt had quietly been hired to start cranking out the treatment long before the shockwave October 30 announcement.

No official confirmation has been given, but Arndt would seem a good call. After winning an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, he was recruited by Disney / Pixar to write the third Toy Story film and delivered something truly special. He’s also been at work on other projects, including the still untitled Pixar mind project. Plus, he’s a die-hard Star Wars fan who has lectured on the first trilogy’s scripts at screenwriting seminars. So while he hasn’t made a deal to write the actual screenplay, he’s certainly someone we could see making it work.

According to Vulture’s sources, the Mouse House is definitely looking to bring back Han, Luke and Leia. And the biggest names in blockbuster directing town (your Spielberg, your Abrams, and, given his ties to Disney / Pixar and his all-round awesomeness, your Brad Bird) will of course get the first look. One person who might look but doesn’t seem to want to touch is Zack Snyder, who has told the LA Times, "I don’t think I’d be interested in directing it. I’m a huge Star Wars fanatic. I just think doing episodes seven, eight and nine is just a slippery slope." For those of you keeping score, that's a "no" from Snyder, Sam Mendes, Gareth Evans, Steven Spielberg and Quentin Tarantino; the rest of Hollywood still to report in.

More on Episode VII as we get it, naturally.

RE: Lucas is the fly in the ointment
If Lucas wanted to make these films himself, he could have just done it. Why go through some charade of hiring another writer, and then trying trying to force his will on them? I'm willing to accept that Lucas is actually stepping away. Its fair enough him being a creative consultant. This is a real chance for Star Wars films at least better than the prequels. More

Whatever it was he understood about powerful storytelling for the original trilogy he has lost along the way. Yet, he is still planning to be creative consultant. Dare I dream
that the tortured memory of the prequels and the "updated" versions of the originals, will be wiped away. Will Star Wars be awesome again, and be made by people who actually have talent and grew up with the series? Can I dream to love Star Wars again, like I did in my childhood? More

Wow, George Lucas looks like he does not want to be there at all in that clip. His body language in it is fascinating. This is the first time we've seen him speak since the Disney deal. The control freak has given up control and it's written all over his face. Notice the puppy dog eyes when he looks at the new head of his company and his impatient, restless hands doing constant comfort gestures. More

And by the way, Zack Snyder, the new Star Wars films are only a "slippery slope" if you screw them up. If you reinvent the franchise and deliver some classic old school thrills in a new 21st Century way, you'll be the hero of heroes to all the fanboys and girls out there. Consider the gauntlet thrown down to you, sir! More

And So It Begins...
I'd like to see Joseph Kosinski who made Disney's Tron Legacy get to direct Star Wars 7. I thought that was a dazzling-looking film. Or you could hire Martin Campbell who made two superb James Bond movies in Casino Royale and GoldenEye. George Lucas did a great job on the first two Star Wars films but the next four left a lot to be desired. (Instead of milking fans of money with three prequel movies, Lucas should really have done one good 3-hour film of Anakin's turn to the dark side.) More

Everything about this is sounding great. The rumours suggest that Hamill, Fischer & Ford are on board now. See, all it took was Lucas to get out of the way. I should note that I'm not a Lucas hater. It's just that he's a terrible writer and director. Kudos to the man though for letting go of his baby and for giving all of the proceeds of the sale to charity. Lets hope they get a stellar director on board More

I'm actually excited about Star Wars for the first time since 1999, and I don't get the naysayers. Do you want the final word to be the prequel trilogy and take Jar Jar to your grave? Or do you want the people behind Toy Story 3 and The Avengers to have a go at resurrecting the ashes of your childhood? I know which I prefer... More
