Skyfall Smashes UK Box Office Record
Overtakes Harry Potter's seven-day tally

02 November 2012  |  Written by Phil de Semlyen  |  Source: MGM, Sony, Eon Productions

Skyfall

Skyfall's opening week at the UK box office means that Eon and Sony probably won't be short of a bob or £37.2m to celebrate the rest of 007's 50th anniversary. That's the figure Sam Mendes' lovingly crafted addition to the canon scooped up in its first seven days on release.

It's a whopping sum that catapults it past Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and into the record books as the biggest seven day gross in UK box-office history.

Skyfall isn't out in the US until Friday, where the strong word of mouth from around the world should fuel receipts. If this release strategy works a fraction as well as it did for The Avengers, expect more good news for the studio beancounters.

Following news of the Star Wars reboot, which Kathleen Kennedy will no doubt be piloting with as much intelligence as Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson have Bond, it's more food for thought for fans of smartly executed, cannily-managed franchises. As Empire's review points out, Skyfall is "pretty much all you could want from a 21st Century Bond".

A non-3D film doing well..?
Gosh, who'da thought it? So people WILL go and see films if they're not 'enhanced' in gimmicky crap! Another nail in the 3D coffin, methinks... More

Thanks for that; Didn't know they were more expensive! I live in France and out here a tickets a ticket! trust me, I watched it in VO (version original) Je m'appell Bond just wouldnt sound the same! More

The Record
What people have failed to notice is that HP7p2 was in 3D, with those tickets being more expensive and still being outgrossed by a 2D film it's looking very promising abroad, as long as it outgrosses Quantum of Solace, I will be happy More

Good yes, the best?
Like everything it's a matter of opinion. Saw it last night and it' is a very good Bond but it has flaws (Q pluging the PC of a known cyber terroist, who has already buggered their system once, into MI5's main frame without a thought for virus's for example!) and the end is telegraphed a bit too soon so I think the 4 star review was fair. But please, not Nolan. More
