Star Wars: Episode VII For 2015
As Disney buys Lucasfilm for $4bn

31 October 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Disney

submit to reddit

Robert A. Iger, chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company, and George Lucas, chairman and founder, Lucasfilm sign the agreement for The Walt Disney Company to acquire Lucasfilm Ltd.

Today we felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in amazement, and were silenced by hard fact. Yes, Walt Disney has gone on another acquisition mission, buying up Lucasfilm for the handsome sum of kee oto* But the even bigger news to come out of the announcement? The companies are planning Episode VII in the Star Wars franchise for 2015.

The jokes, of course, came almost as fast as the questions of whether it was actually true. But it really is, and George Lucas himself was part of the announcement.

“For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next,” said Lucas, chairman and CEO of Lucasfilm, in a statement. “It’s now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. I’ve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime.

“I’m confident that with Lucasfilm under the leadership of Kathleen Kennedy, and having a new home within the Disney organization, Star Wars will certainly live on and flourish for many generations to come. Disney’s reach and experience give Lucasfilm the opportunity to blaze new trails in film, television, interactive media, theme parks, live entertainment, and consumer products.”

While the move remains somewhat shocking, it’s not entirely surprising, especially since Disney bought Marvel (demonstrating, so far, that they can shepherd a geek-friendly company without Disney-fying the result) and Lucas announced he was stepping back from filmmaking to shepherd other projects.

But the new film is only part one of the strategy. Snuck into word that Kennedy will slide into the president’s job at Lucasfilm, comes this little nugget: "Star Wars Episode VII  is targeted for release in 2015, with more feature films expected to continue the Star Wars saga and grow the franchise well into the future.”

In a follow-up investor's call about the move, it was announced that the seventh film would be the first in a new trilogy, with releases aimed at roughly every two to three years. The treatment for the first of the three is already in hand. Lucas and Kennedy discuss the movies in the video below.

Nothing is known about the new movies yet, but of course we’ll keep you advised. Also, anyone else think this might finally mean the long-planned, already-written live-action Star Wars TV show might finally go ahead? After all, Disney are making a S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series alongside their Marvel films, so that could fit. Even if that's still too ambitious, expect a wealth of telly, toy and theme park releases.

*$4.05 billion, in cash and stocks.

Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!
Yeeeeeeeeeeesssssssss!!!!!!
New blood, could be good.
Leave it alone!
Just as long as there's no Jar Jar.
Only if Jar Jar's sillier brother is in it.

L: manwihtheplan I think one of the great challenges for the new trilogy is to come up with a strong villain. Darth Vader was one of the greatest film villains of all time. It's going to be very hard to come up with a new character that can rival Lord Vader! Do you think so! Iconic, yes, wouldnt put him in the top ten greatest villians personally. I think its The Emperor that will be hard to rival. More

I don't think this isn't a bad thing, Disney/ Marvel have done well with the Avengers films, so they obviously have people that cherish the material and understand the fans. I'd say it's safer in Disney's hands than Lucas's. He can't leave them alone. With that in mind Disney need to release a blu ray none Special Edition of the first three films (Han Shot first Mickey deal with it) It's a blatant cash in but would get fans on side. ALWAYS thought that Lucas and that lady who wrote Romaning The Stone had planned a third cycle. The further trilogy of re-booted capers for Luke, Han, Chewie & Leila without Lucas dominating? Just got an image in my head of a masked George Lucas standing over legions of Star Wars fans, menacingly stating "when Star Wars is ashes, you have my permission to cry". The only good thing that might come of this is the release of restored theatrical editions on Blu-ray (which would never have happened while Lucas had full control). Other than that, I don't particularly want to see a haggered Princess Leia strutting around in a gold bikini hand-in-hand with a dementia-suffering Han Solo More

Hmm, I realise I'm in the minority in liking the prequels, but at least, on paper, there was enough potential story points there (Anakin's fall to the dark side, rise of the Empire) to make a compelling yarn. In contrast Cracked pointed out (very amusingly) that most of the Expanded Universe comics sequels stuff tend to be witless retreads of the original trilogy www.cracked.com/article/167_5-reasons-star-wars-sequels -would-be-worse-than-prequels/ Tangentially, whilst one c More

Having slept on it I have a feeling Lucas is trying to mirror his own creation by first being good (the original trilogy) then becoming swayed by the dark side (the CGI fest of the new trilogy) promptly turning to the darkside because everyone keeps bitching at him "it's not fair" (selling up to Disney) and then just when we think all is lost and episode 9 features a Jar Jar meets the Ewoks song and dance number Lucas buys all the rights back (with loose change found in his neckbeard) and rest More

It's the whole company, people. Think bigger. It's all LucasFilm properties (i.e. Star Wars AND Indiana Jones) plus Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. They have also said that the plan is to make a Star Wars movie every 2-3 years and they could potentially do the same thing with Indy. What on earth is everyone complaining about? This is brilliant news. Instead of Lucas we can now have future Star Wars films created by different writers and directors. We could potentially have a Star Wars movie directed by Chris Nolan, Peter Jackson, James Cameron etc etc,, How is this a bad thing? It's not like Disney stopped Pixar from makin great films or Marvel and Joss Whedon from makin a good Avengers movie More

Piss off Disney.
No no no no no. It's not about artistic expression it's about wanting to make more cash. They'll be determined to get back there $4 billion and then some. Their versions of Star Wars (i.e Black Hole and John Carter) sucked something terrible. They're no good at action movies. Star Wars has been ruined by Episodes 1 &2 and Clone Wars Indiana Jones by Crystal Skull and countless other franchises by incessant remakes/reimaginings. Some times you need to just leave a franchise be or to end up de More

RE: Wats the worse that can happen??
Well - this is a turn up - surely a new Star Wars movie where George Lucas is not totally in control can only be a good thing? The director of the year for Disney has been Joss Whedon, might he be given the helm for this one? Interesting.... More

Wats the worse that can happen??
The only up side I can see, is maybe with the franchise in new hands they'll finally release the original trilogy theatrical cut in HD. I'm not bothered about new films either way... The trilogy has already been tarnished by the prequels, I find it very unlikely that episodes VII to IX are going to be any worse! ...Right? OOOOOOOOOOO! More

I will miss the 20th Century Fox logo
That was a big memory of the early films for me... And Universal/ Paramount for Indiana, presumably. But yeah Disney did screw up John Carter not from Mars, so let's hope they let them get on with it- like with Marvel. Could be a good thing, after the appalling sequels- but I don't doubt Lucas will still have his say on things... And no Willow 2 please :-) More

that's some equity release
Great. Now Disney can get a great director (curacon for example) to go back and do the prequels right. Tell us who the Jedi are, why they are special and who the darkside is. Needs more mysticism. No computer generated shit. Use MODELS to mirror look and feel of originals. Make the worlds come alive and don't make a kids film. The originals were not overtly kids orientated, more dads taking their boys to the pictures but for their own selfish reasons orientated. More

Almost Certainly Good News
The prequels left a bad taste in my mouth, and nearly everyone else's, so this is probably a good thing. Get the right creative team in there-- making sure to keep Lucas out of the director's chair-- and the new movies could be amazing. They'll never be the original trilogy, but what is? There's no way any new Star Wars movie could've lived up to our collective memories of them, and that's the main reason the naysayers feel so strongly about the prequels. (No, scratch that. They really WERE most More

RE: lucas films
es that mean Disney have their hooks into Indiana Jones too?es. A rebooted Indiana Jones franchise will mean a new actor playing the role. The franchise can't sustain itself with Ford playing the part. He's in his 70s so it will be a new actor as Indiana Jones. Well, I assume so. I guess Ford could return for one last film but it would make sense to reboot the franchise with a new actor. More

If handled properly this could be really good. A new grittier, mature and darker star wars adventure would be great, they only have to look at the new batman and jim bond films to see which direction to go. More

L: BenTramer Well, this was a shock. Lucas is a billionaire already, surely he didn't need another four billion. With Disney owing all of Lucasfilm do you think this means George Lucas won't get much out of the new films? I wonder if he'll still get a cut of the new toys for the new prequels, plus a percentage of the films' gross? He's a canny businessman so there might be more to the deal than just the four billion dollars sale. More

Can't be any worse than those other 3 rubbish films. You'd have to be a muppet to make them. I must admit, this news completely blindsided me. My initial thougts were of the 'on rolls the cash cow' variety but, thinking on it, this could actually be a good thing. The best thing aboout it that there will be no George Lucas on directorial duties and, whilst I imagine he will have some say with the overall story development, scripting duties will probably go elsewhere. This is potentially very good news and if it's all done properly, we could get some great Star Wars movies. Given th More

Not sure this is a good thing - if only because Disney seems to be slowing absorbing everything.
