Matthew Vaughn Off First Class Sequel
Could Bryan Singer take over?

25 October 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

An alarm is ringing somewhere deep within the 20th Century Fox lot today. It’s howling because Matthew Vaughn has opted to drop out of directing X-Men: First Class sequel Days Of Future Past.

Deadline was unable to dig up a specific reason for Vaughn deciding not to return for the sequel (despite already having begun work developing it). Now the studio will need to find someone else to call the shots, just as it did with Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes when Rupert Wyatt decided to hit the ejector button built into his director's chair.

But it may not need to look that far, because word has it that Future Past’s producer, Bryan Singer, who has been guiding the retro version of the franchise so far, might just switch jobs with Vaughn and pick up the megaphone. But then again, he also has promotional duties coming up on Jack The Giant Slayer.

Whatever happens will likely happen quickly, as Fox has the script (primarily written by Simon Kinberg) in hand. Plus it has commitments from Michael Fassbender, James McAvoy and Jennifer Lawrence to return. Not forgetting the ticking clock of an announced release date: July 18, 2014.

And don’t think this points to a sudden bubbling of bad blood between Vaughn and Fox: he is still looking at making the adaptation of Mark Millar’s Secret Service for the studio.

Is this because the sequel is getting too convoluted? What would of started out as a direct sequel to Vaughan's movie is rumoured to be getting time travel, Sentinels and the cast from Singer's films. It seems to be moving away from the streamlined world of First Class and trying to compete with The Avengers, possibly losing what made First Class work in the first place. On the other hand if Singer takes over he probably won't stick a Take That song on the end of the film. More

Vaughn's a flaky one...
does he struggle to handle the pressure of over-seeing a major tent-pole movie or does he just walk when too many execs are cramping his style? If it's the latter, then he really is working at the wrong studio... More

RE: Not surprised
L: rtleeson That film had some major composition howlers. It wasn't really finished. A few VFX shoots were uncomplete e.g. the coin hitting the floor in the Nuclear reactor. eah, and let's not forget Magneto's inexplicable Irish accent that appeared near the end of the film! Clearly there was no time to redub Fassbender's accent. Something else to consider semi-seriously. As far as I know, January Jones has never confirmed the identity of her son's father. At the time of her preg More

Again?! This happened before when Vaughan started to develop and cast X-Men 3 only to walk due to time pressure issues. More

RE: Matthew Vaughn Off First Class Sequel
If Singer steps in I will be very happy, Vaughn did a great job on the last one of getting the series back on track and keeping it consistent to the style of the universe that Singer created so if Vaughn's leaving and they want to keep the momentum going then Singer's the obvious choice. More
