Incredible New Hobbit Issue Of Empire
Five amazing 3D lenticular covers

24 October 2012  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Empire

Ladies and gentlemen, hold on to your hats lest your minds be blown or the hair on your feet stand on end! The December issue of Empire hits shelves tomorrow, and we have five gorgeous 3D lenticular covers to celebrate The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. That's right - move over Tito, Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon and Michael, there's a new Jackson Five in town!

Your choices are Bilbo (Martin Freeman), the titular halfling; Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), the elf queen; Gandalf (Ian McKellen) reprising his wizard role; Gollum (Andy Serkis), the twisted Ring addict, and Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), the leader of the dwarf band setting out on an adventure to reclaim their lost lands from the dragon Smaug.

In other words, our five covers give you a good cross-section of Middle-earth's varied population, and is as non-species-ist as we could manage (except against orcs. No one wants a goblin on the cover). They're also quite beautiful things and they appear to move and breathe on their own, which is rather lovely.

Choose your favourite, collect all five or turn your home into a Middle-earth extravaganza with hundreds - it's up to you! Subscribers will get their own exclusive cover, along with one of the lenticular covers separately from the magazine. It's a double-win!

The new issue of Empire will hit news stands tomorrow, October 25, as well as the iTunes store in the UK and US. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits cinemas on December 14, with two further films following on December 13, 2013 (The Desolation Of Smaug) and July 18, 2014 (There And Back Again).

RE: How to buy back issues?
It does seem buggered. If you go to the 'contact us' link at the bottom of the page on the main site try 'other Empire issues' - it might get you a response that way. More

How to buy back issues?
I can't find a way to buy back issues. The link from the empire site goes to the publisher great magazines, but says nothing about buying back issues. You would think if there is a stock of these Hobbit issues, they could be selling them directly now for specific covers and making some cash? I'd pay more than the cover price to get them all. More

Non Subscription Covers are better!
Got Gandalf with my subscription and picked Gollum up at the supermarket. Sub issue has Empire logo and tag lines as per the pick above, but the supermarket one has a great replica of the Gollum pic with no script at all. That is good enough to cut and mount as a poster. Just seems odd the casual buyers get the better one! More

RE: Subscriptions
I didn't get mine yet but so long as I get the mag on the on shelf date I'm not really that bothered. I have to say I'm a little disappointed, we've had a lenticular cover before and I was expecting something a little.. more. Not sure what though... More

RE:
L: Swedle this is the only time I do't like being a subscriber, i don't get to choose my cover! :( like the time you did the legends or icons issue (can't remember which) and i disctincly recall subcribers getting an 'ALMOST-icon' on the cover, what's the deal with that?! t would be great if we could give people the choice, but logistically it isn't possible. For subscribers we have produced an exclusive cover, plus a loose 3D cover (of one of the 5 covers allocated at random) t More
