007 Minutes Of Skyfall
Of Thomas Newman's score, at least

With Skyfall arriving on October 26, now is the last chance for a big publicity push. And it would seem that Eon and Sony are focused on the music at the moment. We’ve already had Adele’s theme released online and now comes the first preview of Thomas Newman’s score, which you can hear above courtesy of Cinema Musica.

Newman is taking over from previous multi-Bond scorer David Arnold, with Sam Mendes bringing in the composer he’s worked with on almost every film he’s made to date.

From the sounds of it, Newman has largely kept to the modern Arnold template with a mix of sounds and tones, albeit with more of his own style seeping through.

The soundtrack itself arrives on October 29, and if you want to see the track listing, head to Film Music Reporter. We would caution that some of the titles could conceivably be minor spoilers, though nothing quite as bad as those notorious Phantom Menace entries.

Finally, a new TV spot is also online, aimed at the US (where audiences have to be patient and wait until November 9). It’s really just a mash-up of bits we’ve seen in the trailers, but take a look anyway.

Bond theme
Oh - and I forgot something: It seems to me that for any reason they kind of hide the Bond theme. Barry always managed to implant it in his score. More

Exchangeable
Might fit to the sequence in the movie but has no 'character'. Apart from - perhaps - 'Casino Royale' this is my problem with all scores since Barry left. Anyone who remembers the score of 'Tomorrow never dies', 'Die another day', 'Quantum of solace'? Guess not. But everybody still remembers 'Goldfinger', 'Thunderball', 'YOLT', OHMSS, 'Moonraker' where the music represented the movie perfectly. More

Too soft
Thomas Newman is a great composer but I think a Bond movie needs a really meaty score and whilst I am making an assumption on one track, it seems as though it is out of place to me. John Barry WAS Bond and I still think David Arnold more than matched John Barry in terms of richness and depth. For example, listen to the Casino Royale Soundtrack #6: Solange, shut your eyes and you I swear it is John Barry composing. I am also a bit let down by the Adele song, as again someone with a HUGE voice More

Bourneish
To be honest this sounds a little bit more like the Bourne Films to me. That and a teeny mix of a 70s epic movie. More

RE: To be honest, I was never a fan of Arnold's anyway.
I've been pleasantly surprised with the drip-feed of information about Skyfall, except for this. I know it's only a sample but I'm not hearing any of those important musical textures that define a Bond score. Barry's sweeping strings were well mimicked by Arnold, this seems closer to the experimental approach we heard in Goldeneye. Newman's a great composer but not convinced he's right for this. Here's hoping the rest of the score is better. More

To be honest, I was never a fan of Arnold's anyway.
John Barry remains THE Bond composer as far as I'm concerned. More
