Who Is Captain America 2's Female Lead?
The directors reveal a shortlist

Clockwise from top left: Emelia Clarke, Jessica Brown Findlay, Teresa Palmer, Alison Brie and Imogen Poots.

Deadline have been told that the directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Joe and Anthony Russo (Welcome To Collinwood, You Me & Dupree, Community, Arrested Development), have drawn up the names of five actresses who could play the female lead in their upcoming superhero adventure.

Here they are, then: Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones‘  Daenerys Targaryen, aka "Khaleesi"), Jessica Brown Findlay (Downton Abbey‘s Lady Sybil Crawley), Teresa Palmer (I Am Number Four, The Sorcerer's Apprentice), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later, Jane Eyre, Fright Night) and Alison Brie (Mad Men, Community, The Five Year Engagement).

At this point, of course, nothing is confirmed, but as this is a Marvel movie, this sort of spectulation opportunity is manna from heaven for fans of the sprawling, interconnected comic-book universe.

All five names listed above are strong suggestions from the Russo Brothers: up-and-coming actresses already much-loved in their niches but yet to become household names as big screen stars.

Naturally, the likes of their Community colleague Alison Brie would have the comedy chops to do something funnier, but considering this Winter Soldier storyline is based on a reasonably dark tale Cap's best mate Bucky, presumed dead, is brought back to life with amnesia, given a robotic arm and brainwashed for the bad guys - perhaps hilarity is not on the cards.

The trouble these potential love interests will have if you presume this female lead will indeed be a love interest is that they'll have to battle with the memory of Hayley Atwell's Peggy Carter from the original Captain America. In one Avengers deleted scene, for example, Cap is shown looking teary-eyed over a file showing her character has now RETIRED to Winchester, meaning that whoever wants to challenge her for his affections will have some hard work to do.

Then there's Deadline's report that Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow may be involved (perhaps as a cameo) in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, though again, this is just a rumour. It'll be nice touch if she does, however, especially considering that Iron Man 3 has been promised to be entirely seperate from the rest of the Avengers crew according to studio head Kevin Feige.

So what do you think? Who is your favourite for the role? Let us know in the comment box and poll below, and don't forget that Captain America: The Winter Soldier is scheduled for an April 2014 release.

Who should play the female lead in Captain America: The Winter Soldier?

RE: That bird in Avengers movie
The romance in Captain America was pretty unconvincing, and him visiting her in the present day would just be awkward. They're better off just carrying on with new characters. More

That bird in Avengers movie
there's this pretty girl who was staring at him in Avengers after he saved her and a bunch of other people. Camera lingers on her, like she's significant. I assumed that she might be a later love interest in Captain America's next movie. Would make some kind of sense. More

This is not news.
I have a shortlist of things in my fridge I might eat tonight, too. I doubt anyone gives a shit about that either. Cast the role first, then you've got a story. "A few chicks you don't care about might or might not get an undisclosed role in a movie you're not sweating over that's not out for about 19 months." Seriously, that's not news. Not even close. RE: Who Is Captain America 2's Female Lead?
L: Scruffybobby Well I think we all know where vad3r's vote is going... most certainly won't be voting for any of my favourite actresses. I hope those who I have no interest in get the part. Being the female lead/love interest in a superhero movie is a nail in the coffin. They're given nothing to do. See: Katie Holmes, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Kate Bosworth, Malin Ackerman, Natalie Portman, Liv Tyler, Jennifer Connelly, Kristen Dunst, Emma Stone, Hayley Atwell, Blake Lively etc More

RE: Who Is Captain America 2's Female Lead?
Alison Brie, I think she's great and she's already got an in with the directors. Also please don't let it be Jessica Brown Findlay I find so very annoynig, the only thing where I didn't mind her in was Black Mirror, she's easily the worse in Downton. More

I'd love to see Alison Brie do it (because I love her), but Emelia Clarke would be in keeping with the Game of Thrones connection to Cap, with Natalie Dormer appearing in The First Avenger. More

RE: Peggy Carter is not dead.
L: BelfastBoy L: markwaters Peggy isn't dead in that deleted scene. Cap thinks about phoning her. Anybody notice though that some of the actresses mentioned look a bit like Hayley Atwell? I just hope the character isn't something cheesy like Peggy's granddaughter! sp; Further to my earlier post, rumours elsewhere are suggesting that the love interest will be Sharon Carter, Peggy's niece. Apparently this is a character from the comics, but still sounds pretty cheesy to me! Sur More

RE: Peggy Carter is not dead.
L: markwaters Peggy isn't dead in that deleted scene. Cap thinks about phoning her. sp; You beat me to it! Slightly obvious error or what? There's also the fact that Joss Whedon said that he intended a scene where Steve Rogers (in the present day) encounters an aged Peggy - the scene wasn't filmed for Avengers but I think it's fair to assume that Peggy is still alive until proved otherwise. Anybody notice though that some of the actresses mentioned look a bit like Hayley Atwell? I just More
