Seth MacFarlane Is Hosting The Oscars
From Family Guy to Ted to The Academy

01 October 2012  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Deadline

Seth Macfarlane

After the disappointment of Eddie Murphy pulling out last year and his relatively last-minute replacement, Billy Crystal, not quite hitting his previous best, the pressure is definitely on the next person stepping into the Kodak Theater's limelight. Enter, then, Seth MacFarlane, who has been officially confirmed as 2013's Oscars host.

The Family Guy writer/director/voice artist/producer/one-man cartoon comedy machine has recently seen a huge success in the motion-picture business too, with Ted scoring big in the box office ($420 million plus worldwide) and a sequel already lined up.

Elsewhere, an album, 'Music Is Better Than Words', has flaunted his singing skills, and he's even appeared at the Albert Hall. Then there's his Saturday Night Live hosting recently, which looks like it served as a kind of dry run before Uncle Oscar gave his seal of approval.

It's a brave choice from the Academy this time around  Macfarlane isn't afraid of dropping a penny in the swear jar but at least his epic pipes should be able to fill a room. Perhaps he'll even be able to rival Hugh Jackman's ditty from a few years' back with something like 2007's Stewie and Brain-filled Emmys-opening number.

What's important, however, is that Seth is clearly a choice that favours getting younger viewers watching, and that is very encouraging indeed.

But what are your thoughts? Will Seth's comedy stylings suit the Academy's big day, or will it go down like a lead balloon come  February 24? Let us know in the comment box below.

P.S. Here's an example of Seth's previous attempts at Oscars humour from an old Family Guy episode...

What do you make of Seth MacFarlane hosting the 85th Academy Awards?
Yes please
A chicken fight better be involved
Giggity giggity giggity
You know what? This might actually work
If there's any sort of talking animal/baby, I'm out
No thanks

RE: Seth MacFarlane Is Hosting The Oscars
It'll be sort of like when Huge Jackman did it except less dancing & more jokes though the singing will be the same. More

RE: Seth MacFarlane Is Hosting The Oscars
Not a fan of his animated shows but the guy is a good host and a great singer and I think he's a brilliant choice. The Oscars need someone that is charismatic and who can also contribute to the script and Seth fits that bill. More

RE: Seth MacFarlane Is Hosting The Oscars
Great news and not surprised. His bit in this years Emmys was the funniest and he did a great job of hosting SNL. I'm not a fan of his cartoons, but he is a funny guy with a great voice. More

Nothing to lose, have they?
Considering the choices the Academy made in previous years (James and Anne, anyone?) I'm actually looking forward to this. But in a time, where Ricky Gervais had been tamed by the HFPA for the Globes as early as his second appearance as host, I honestly don't think MacFarlane has it in himself to give the Oscars the uproar, they need so desperately. Oh no, he'll be totally insufferable now. I just hope he'll be more Stewie than Ted. More

I think that if they're not getting Neil Patrick Harris, this is actually a perfect choice. He's got an edgy sense of humour that will keep the ceremony interesting, plus that amazing singing voice so he can still do more classic stuff to please those who prefer that kind of styling. In interviews he comes across as a very likeable person. More

Great Choice!!
Family Guy has been dubious for a long time now, but Seth McFarlane himself is always extremely entertaining whether as host on SNL, roastmaster on a Comedy Central Roast, or a guest on numerous talk shows. He's very consistently funny, a great singer, has endless pop culture knowledge and has a bit of an edge. I think he's definitely the man to un-bland the Oscars. Finally! More
