US network ABC has ponied up the cash with a commitment to pay Moore to develop the pilot script. Assuming it ever goes to series – nothing is guaranteed in the cutthroat world of telly pilots and network decisions – the show is expected to hew fairly close to the movie’s premise, which saw Ledger’s peasant William Thatcher posing as a knight to achieve his destiny, while also winning the heart of a princess.
Like the film, it’ll blend modern music and sporting sensibilities with the jousting / sword-swinging action. If Moore’s sensible, he’ll also find comic talents to match those of original stars Alan Tudyk, Paul Bettany and Mark Addy, who added a lot to the movie’s entertainment value. If you need a refresher or if you’ve never seen A Knight’s Tale (why not?!), check out the trailer below.
Given the modern upturn in TV's fascination with musicals, this seems like a logical choice. If they do it, they'd better take their time and do it right though. This has been one of my top movies since it came out. I don't know how many lessons I've taught around it, but its such a creative and unique film that it always engages new watchers.
If this goes south, Ron Moore should get a right thonging. More
