S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Is A Go
Joss Whedon co-writing the pilot

29 August 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Series Is A Go

Earlier this month, alongside the great rejoicing that came with the news that Avengers writer-director Joss Whedon would return for the sequel, there was the announcement that part of the creative maestro’s big deal with Marvel was to oversee a long-gestating TV series set in the studio’s universe. Well, we now know that the show will be focused on S.H.I.E.L.D and US network ABC has ordered a pilot.

The show will, as many have predicted, follow what the movies call the "Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Division" and will chronicle the organisation’s activity, albeit on a lower budget (think X-Files instead of X-Men) and almost certainly without appearances from the super-powered likes of Captain America (though some of the characters may crop up come ratings sweeps time). Is it too much to hope that it’ll take place in a pre-Avengers universe so Clark Gregg’s Coulson will enjoy some more screen time? The plot specifics, however, remain under wraps.

To say that Whedon has some experience with TV is sort of like saying Usain Bolt knows how to run a bit. So it’s heartening to hear that the Buffy / Angel / Firefly mastermind will be involved as much as he can, given that he’s also going to be busy overseeing phase 2 of the Marvel cinematic master plan and the Avengers’ next adventure. The show's early details currently call for him to direct the pilot, but that’s assuming he has time.

He’ll have some truly qualified help on the scripting front, with Dr Horrible co-writers (and brother / sister-in-law) Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancheroen on board to act as writer-producers along with Jeffrey Bell (who has worked on Alias and V, but was also a part of the Angel staff). Marvel’s Jeph Loeb, himself no stranger to the Whedonverse having worked on the short-lived Buffy animated series, is also overseeing things.

Exciting, no? So come on people: what do you want to see in a S.H.I.E.L.D show? (All together now: “COULSSSOOOOONNNN!”)

Yup! Coulson!
And Maria Hill! Also, they'd be unwise to not feature at least a few Nick Fury cameos now and then. Not a per-episode appearance, of course, but enough so that fans will be happy. Then, as viewers get used to SHIELD operatives working without him, scale him back more and more. But if they don't at least feature him in the pilot, there will be blood. Er--grumbles! I meant to say grumbles! More

RE: Sounds good
L: Gordy Please God let someone somewhere re-commission Firefly, adly that is one thing that will never happen. It has been ten years since Firefly came and went and most of the cast are on new shows so even if they wanted to, they couldn't do it. Joss Whedon has stated that it will never return but he was glad he had the opportunity to end the story of River in Serenity. More

RE: Jeff Loeb will ruin it.
L: ahaig He did a good job with Smallville and Heroes though. Surely everyone is excited to see what Whedon, Loeb et al will come with? A good team in my opinion. No JLA though! have a habit of judging people based on their recent work. Also, Heroes was only good for the first season. He also didn't have the level of control on those shows as he has now. We'll have to agree to disagree and wait and see. More

Sounds good
It sounds good, loved Coulson's scenes. Please God let someone somewhere re-commission Firefly, it would be awesome, to find out what happened after Serenity. Saw that again on TV the other day and I realised I had forgotten how good Firefly was, will have to watch the boxed set again.... More

RE: Jeff Loeb will ruin it.
L: ahaig Oh and it's Jeph. owever it's spelt and however many great comics he's written, it still doesn't forgive his actions with the animated division of Marvel. Tell me you've seen Ultimate Spiderman and liked it, or that EMH wasn't better before he got involved. He cancelled it to make a more kid friendly Avengers, as if kids are too dumb to understand EMH. I think I have reason to be worried based on his TV MO. More

RE: Jeff Loeb will ruin it.
I disagree Jeph Loeb will make it awesome. He has created some of the best superhero stories ever. Batman, Hulk, Daredevil, and Superman he absolutely nailed. And Spiderman Blue is probably the best origin comic for that character. Probably :) More

Uh-oh! OVERKILL ALERT! Isn't Marvel in danger of getting greedy and killing the goose that lays the golden eggs? You have too much of a good thing, you know. Like ek 90s. Well, I say "good..." More

Jeff Loeb will ruin it.
Jeff Loeb ruined the great Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes by stopping story arcs. He then canceled it. He then made Ultimate Spiderman, the worst thing to happen to Spiderman ever. The man should stay away from television. More

RE: Huge Marvel fan
I wonder if this will follow on from the "Item 47" one shot in some way. I've managed to see that and it does kinda work as a mini pilot - that would preclude any involvement from Coulson though. More
