Spielberg Considering Bin Laden Pic?
UPDATE: Spiel-spokesman says no...

27 August 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: NY Post

Spielberg Considering Bin Laden Pic?

Update: The Hollywood Reporter got a comment from Spielberg's people, and apparently he won't be optioning the book to either direct it or hand it to DreamWorks TV. False alarm! It's not like he's not already busy...

...

Given how the death of Osama Bin Laden struck a nerve, particularly across the pond, it’s perhaps not surprising that several films about the mission to find and assassinate him are in various stages of development or production. Now you can add one more, as studios and producers are circling the latest book on the subject, No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account Of The Mission That Killed Osama Bin Laden. And one of the biggest names apparently taking a look? Steven Spielberg.

The tome – written by Navy SEAL Matt Bissonette using the pseudonym Mark Owen – has already been causing controversy as well as interest, since there are concerns that he breached national security with some of the details included and that he may end up on charges.

Still, that doesn’t appear to be stopping anyone approaching the writer or his agents about the rights. According to the New York Post, Spielberg has already been in talks to take the rights and develop a film, with HBO also interested.

Of course, Spielberg expressing an interest doesn’t mean he’ll actually pick it: he can naturally have his choice of projects and already has several in development. Even if he does nab a deal, don’t go expecting the movie for a while yet. His current project, Robopocalypse, isn’t due to hit screens until 2014, though we are at least getting Lincoln a little sooner, with the Daniel Day-Lewis film set to arrive here on January 25.

Should he decide he wants to tackle the Bin Laden mission, any film would come out after Kathryn Bigelow’s similarly-themed Zero Dark Thirty and The Weinstein Company’s Code Name Geronimo
