Kevin Costner Set For Jack Ryan
Update: the plan is in place

Kevin Costner Set For Jack Ryan

Update: Deadline is now reporting that Costner is locked and Paramount is putting the pieces in place to have Kenneth Brangh put Jack Ryan out in late 2013 with Chris Pine and Keira Knightley starring, followed by Without Remorse and the as-yet-undecided film based around Costner's Harper character. David Koepp has re-written the Ryan film and Tom Hardy has been offered Remorse, which Christopher McQuarrie has rewritten to direct.

...

It looks like Paramount is hoping to turn their Tom Clancy properties into something of an Avengers-style shared universe, with films planned around both Jack Ryan (the Chris Pine-starring film currently still called, er, Jack Ryan) and fellow CIA operative John Kelly, who will feature in Without Remorse. And the Nick Fury of this particular plan, who will crop up in both those movies and possibly beyond? William Harper, played by Kevin Costner.

The studio is now making a deal with Costner to play American patriot and idealist Harper, who recruits both Ryan and Kelly in their respective movies and mentors them. According to Deadline, he may also then headline his own movie, but that particular possibility is still just vapourware for now.

As of right now, Kenneth Branagh is both directing Jack Ryan and playing the villain, with Keira Knightley rumoured to be Pine’s love interest.

Over on Without Remorse, Christopher McQuarrie is re-writing the film with an eye to directing and Tom Hardy is being courted to take on the role of Kelly, previously played by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber. It would seem like a good fit for the actor, who has the necessary physical presence for Kelly (and then some) but also the wit. And hey! If it all works out, we could end up seeing a truly exciting This Means War reunion! All right, okay, stop throwing things at the screen. The idea of Pine and Hardy in a serious spy combo certainly does have an appeal.

It's an ambitious plan, and one that could all fall apart. But we like a lot of the elements in place already.

Costner, who recently found small screen success with Hatfields & McCoys, will next be seen in a little movie called Man Of Steel, due to land (from Krypton) here on June 14 next year.

RE:
PalolColeone Clearly you didnt read Without Remorse. It is John Kelly and the book is the origin story of the man who becomes John Clark CIA legend and Rainbow 6 himself. It's one of the very best Clancy books. oz_p It was Greer. More

Wait a minute!!
Ok since when are they making Without Remorse? Its one of my fav books so they better do it justice and keep the timeline intact as its a great book also Tom Hardy would be perfect for the role a slong as they stay true to it and dont go too hollywood.. I dont remember Harper being the guy who recruited Kelly however (or even being in the book), wasnt it Admiral Greer?? More

You lost me a Keira Knightley
I find it hard to take her serious as an actress, definately not right for a Jack Ryan film. More

I hope this Hardy, Pine thing works out.
The only good thing about This Means War was their chemistry. More

nice
love Costner, much maligned by some. made some great movies (Dances with Wolves, JFK, Open Range, Untouchables, Field of Dreams and on and on) and some not too good (ummm... ok, I'm a fan alright?) but really he's just kept on going, not worried by critics or passing fashion. I'm a big fan of Harrison Ford but even I would say that Mr Ford could've taken more than one leaf out of Kev's book. Interestingly Ford was the best known Jack Ryan. Like Pine, like Hardy (although I do think sometimes he More

FLASHMAN
What a baffling career path for Costner; a true showbiz mystery for the ages; in the early 1990's it seemed like he could magic Rothschild from H2O; he had (& has) all the natural abilities of an All Time Great, yet his stubborness has been as damaging as substance abuse - all being well, he deserves 'Mentor' parts as successful for him, as they were for Sean Connery, who began that gravy train with The Untouchables.
