Expendables 2 Invades The US Box Office

Sly, Arnie, Bruce, Chuck and co were well and truly back this weekend at the American box office. Though The Expendables 2 didn’t manage to haul in quite as much as the first film’s opening weekend ($34.8 million) , the old geezers (and some young bloods) did take $28.7 million and secured the top place in the chart.

That meant The Bourne Legacy got pushed down to second place, but the thriller still made $17 million, keeping it ahead of some new arrivals. Stop-motion comedy terror ‘toon ParaNorman opened in third with $14 million, pushing Will Ferrell / Zach Galifianakis political laugh-fest The Campaign down to fourth with $13.3 million. Music remake Sparkle arrived in fifth with $12 million.

The Dark Knight Rises fell from third to sixth, making $11.1 million in its fifth week of release, for a running total of $409 million across the pond. Disney’s new family pic The Odd Life Of Timothy Green appeared to falter, launching in seventh with $10.9 million. Hope Springs slipped to eighth, taking $9.1 million, with Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days at ninth with $3.8 million and Total Recall sliding down the charts from fifth to 10th with $3.5 million. The sci-fi remake has now taken $51.7 million in the US and $79.2 million worldwide, which is disappointing given its estimated $150 million budget.

To muscle your way into the charts, head to Box Office Mojo.
