Joss Whedon Will Write/Direct Avengers 2
Also working on a Marvel TV series

08 August 2012  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Coming Soon

He wavered for a while, calling it "an enormous amount of work telling what is ultimately someone else's story." Everyone can now breathe a sigh of relief though, since Joss Whedon has just been officially announced as the writer and director of Avengers 2. He's even been persuaded to undertake even more work in the Marvel universe, overseeing an as-yet unrevealed TV series.

Disney chairman and CEO BIb Iger broke the news during Disney's "earnings call", which must have been a reasonably happy occasion, given The Avengers' $1.5bn haul. An official statement from Marvel Studios soon followed:

"Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015. As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel’s The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel’s cinematic universe."

So that very strongly suggests we'll see the next Avengers team-up in the summer of 2015, following next year's Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World, and 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians Of The Galaxy.

As for the TV series, we could be talking about the "high concept cop show" set in the Avengers' world, that was being mooted recently (which sounds potentially a bit like DC Comics' Gotham Central). ABC is also the intended home of the Incredible Hulk series that Guillermo Del Toro has been attached to for a while, and of AKA Jessica Jones, based on Brian Michael Bendis' Alias series. Maybe Joss will be advising on all three at once, or none of those at all: perhaps he has something else up his sleeve. We will, of course, keep you in the loop.

But how does the news of Whedon's return make you feel?
I am doing the Dance Of Joy right now!
SO EXCITED
I hate happiness and was hoping Uwe Boll would do it.

Is the TV thing not going to be linked to Item 47, then?
That would seem the obvious way forward. Have a TV show set in NY, dealing with the aftermath of the Avengers scrap, focusing on normal people with the ability to bring in superheroes for key episodes, building a story arc that has a finale also known as Avengers 2. More

L: vad3r L: Shifty Bench Maybe he doesn't want to do TV any more? And no Buffy reboot please. I loved the first Avengers but don't want to see one of my heroes invest so much time that he could be using elsewhere. e's one of my heroes too but he's still a) a writer/director and b) human, so he goes where the money is. This is great news. Of course, the deal means he can't do his own film and TV work for a while but he can still do web series, like Dr. Horrible 2 Apparently he enjoys doing that sort of thing anyway, so hopefully we'll get Joss original work that way...... More

AWESOME. Makes me think Whedon already has a TV idea, and that's the source of the "Avengers based TV show" rumours: so to make that happen, Marvel bartered the show for him doing Avengers 2. Plus, y'know, a pile of money Galactus would struggle to choke down. More

2nd Chance To Give Us The Movie We Hoped For?
Must admit, Avengers was my biggest disappointment of the year (along with The Dictator) I hope the second shot gives us long time Marvel fans the film we have waited 3 decades for! For me the first one (Hulk smashing Loki aside) was all a bit 'Meh!' More

Great stuff
I'm glad that he's doing it. Slightly sad it means Joss can't work on his own original ideas (although maybe in a producer role?), but he clearly loves these characters and knows how to find their voice. If he thought it was difficult tying together the strands for the first Avengers movie, it's going to be even more complicated with the rest of the stand alone films that are coming, including Guardians of the Galaxy.
