New On The Road Trailer Swings In
Sam Riley gets hip to the Beats

The US trailer arrived a few months ago, but with the film's imminent UK arrival, we've now got our own promo for On The Road, Walter Salles' eagerly-anticipated adaptation of Jack Kerouac's famous Beat novel

It's not terribly different to the first trailer, it must be said, but gives us further glimpses of Salles' impressive cast, plenty of jazz, and loving period detail in the cars, landscapes and, of course, wide open roads. It's looking like an Edward Hopper painting come to life.

Kerouac's book was the cornerstone of the Beat movement, influencing the likes of Bob Dylan, Hunter S Thompson, and Gus Van Sant, who tried to get his own film version going for years. It was originally written as an autobiographical travelogue, but became nominally a novel when it was decided that it might be a good idea to change the names. Kerouac typed it as one long unpunctuated stream-of-consciousness scroll: a detail that the trailer reveals has made it into the movie.

Sam Riley plays the story's protagonist Sal Paradise (based on Kerouac), with Garrett Hedlund as Dean Moriarty (Neal Cassady), Kristen Stewart as MaryLou (Luanne Henderson), Kirsten Dunst as Camille (Carolyn Cassady), Tom Sturridge as Carlo Marx (Allen Ginsberg), and in the performance everyone's particularly looking forward to, Viggo Mortensen as Old Bull Lee (William Burroughs).

Salles' Motorcycle Diaries cohort Jose Rivera wrote the screenplay, and while it doesn't have a release date in its homeland yet, On The Road is out in the UK on October 12. In your face, daddio.
