Russell Crowe Considering Dark Tower
Ron Howard wants him as Deschain

Russell Crowe Considering Dark Tower

The long, winding saga of Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman’s attempt to bring Stephen King’s Dark Tower series to various screens in an ambitious blend of movies and TV shows has taken another turn. Back in March, Warner Bros. rescued at least the first movie from limbo after Universal shut the project down for budget reasons. With Goldsman due to hand in the latest draft, word arrives that Howard and the rest have been talking to Russell Crowe about playing main character Roland Deschain.

Yes, while Javier Bardem was long considered the team’s first choice for the last living member of a knight-like order of gunslingers, he’s no longer involved and Team Tower has been instead approaching their Beautiful Mind star about taking over.

Crowe would certainly help sell the idea to the studio, especially given his recent turn for Warners on Man Of Steel. And the fact that he’s unafraid to tackle big, complicated projects such as Darren Aronofsky’s Noah.

Of course, everything is at an early stage still, and Warners may yet decide it doesn’t want to be involved. But this could just be the answer Howard and co were looking for…

I always pictured Timothy Olyphant as Roland. I definitely believe Howard can't pull this off but it doesn't matter because the studio will get cold feet. If Del Toro couldn't convince them about Mountains of Madness then Richie Cunningham cant make The Dark Tower More

I would rather wait
I agree this is not the best choice for director. I know these films have been in development hell for a number of years but I would rather wait for the right director. I love these books but as the story progresses I think the strangeness of the story would be too much for Ron Howard to handle. Del Toro would be a good choice. More

OK, so it wasn't just me!
Thank God! I thought I was the only one worried about Grazer and Opie doing these movies. I'm just saying these two took two pretty incredible books(Davinci Code and Angels and Demons) and made two incredibly boring movies. I just hope they don't screw this one up! More

No to Crowe, please God no!!
If Ron Howard has to attempt this folly, then Crowe will simply not do. I'm assuming Howard has read the books. And he pictured Russell Fighting Round The World Fucking Crowe in his mind as he was reading? If this is the case then his imagination is even worse than his movies. Seriously, check out imdb. All his movies are mediocre at best (Apollo 13 & Frost/Nixon). In case it needed saying IE CUNNINGHAM IS THE WRONG GUY FOR THIS!Give it to AMC or Showtime. They need a big fantasy epic to riv More

Drinkin' & Fightin' his way around the world
Crowe isn't Roland - anyonw who is a fan of the books surely can't see Russell pulling that off (not to say Mr. Crowe isn't a good actor....he's just wrong for this part). My choice would be Christian Bale - maybe a little young but that aside, he'd be perfect. More

Gravitas
I think Russel Crowe may be a good choice. I think Roland needs to be played by somone who has Gravitas and is able to show this with few words. Crowe might just be able to pull it off. More

RE: What about...
I envisaged good old Viggo when reading these recently. Plus Jimmy Franco for Eddie Dean. Who's with me? More

The budget thing concerns me a little. I've only read the first two books so far, but i don't understand the budgetary concerns. I'm sure the later books get bigger in scale, but the first two are easily done as a tv show. Honestly, i think they'd be better casting someone new or unknown, then they get them cheap, and use the TV show to launch the films, which then launch the star. Don't really see Crowe as Deschain, or Bardem. More
