Eccleston Joins Thor: The Dark World
As villain Malekith

02 August 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: The Hollywood Reporter

Eccleston Joins Thor: The Dark World

Svartalfheim! Bless you. Okay, so we’re talking Thor: The Dark World, which got close to locking in a second villain in Mads Mikkelsen, but lost his services to the new TV take on Hannibal Lecter. Instead, director Alan Taylor and the Marvel team have now decided that Christopher Eccleston would make a fine bad guy to take on Asgard’s finest.

Eccleston is in final negotiations to play Malekith The Accursed, who, as his title suggests, is not a happy-go-lucky sort. He’s the leader of the dark elves of Svartalfheim (you really should have those allergies checked out) and, in the comics at least, also happens to be a teleport-capable shape-shifter with strong energy powers.

Eccleston seems like a good choice for someone to cause chaos in the same film as Tom Hiddleston’s Loki, even if him being a villain conjures thoughts of G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra and failed fantasy franchise-starter The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising. Hopefully the Thor universe will make better use of the Ninth Doctor.

Thor: The Dark World is in production now with Chris Hemsworth, Zachary Levi, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Ray Stevenson and more aboard. It'll be out on November 8, 2013.

Kind of worried now....
I love Eccleston, but his villain roles tend to be a bit...awful. Hope he doesnt chew scenery in a silly accent. More

Am I going to be the first to mention Dr Who? Ok. Dr Who! Seriously though, this guy was not only a great Doctor (though he may wish to forget it...) but he's a very fine actor! More

I wonder will Eccleston do his usual Oop North baddie or try something different. So Thor 2 got close to "locking in" Mads Mikkelsen but didn't actually "lock him in" so there was no need to use your stock, trite phrase, Mr James White! Get a new vocabulary. More

Eccleston's great. Bring on the Loki and Malekith tag team! More

Fantastic!
Eccleston's a brilliant, charismatic British actor and we need to see more of him on the big screen in roles that let him shine. Seeing him and Hiddlestone playing marry havoc will be sweeeeeeet. More

I reckon he'll make a perfect bad guy duo with Tom Hiddleston. More

Hmmm
Not sure about this one, I would have preferred Luke Goss in this role, (similar to his brilliant turn in Hellboy 2) More
