Though there were fears that US moviegoers might be scared to return to cinemas in the wake of the tragedy in Colorado, people still turned out to watch movies albeit in smaller numbers this weekend. The Dark Knight Rises earned $64 million in its second week, a fall of 60%, and now has a US total of $289 million. That's respectable by any measure, if some way behind The Avengers and Nolan's previous Bat-film, The Dark Knight, at the same stage. Ice Age: Continental Drift also stayed in place, holding on to second for $13.3 million.

There was much less good news for The Watch, with the Ben Stiller comedy debuting in third with a substandard $13 million, while Step Up Revolution also failed to tap into the box office beat, earning $11.8 million at fourth. Fifth was Ted, which went down just one place and made $7.5 million.

The Amazing Spider-Man fell to sixth place with $6.8 million, Brave was seventh with $4.2 million and Magic Mike went down to eighth, earning $2.6 million. Ninth was Savages with $1.7 million, while Moonrise Kingdom was 10th with $1.4 million.
