Etan Cohen Now Writing Ghostbusters 3
Sony won't give up the ghost

10 July 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Variety

Etan Cohen Now Writing Ghostbusters 3

Though the road through development hell has been long, painful and littered with rejected drafts, Sony isn’t quite ready to drape a shroud over its attempts to make Ghostbusters 3. The studio has now hired one of the many who cobbled together Men In Black 3, Etan Cohen, to take a crack.

Word that there would be a new keyboard sheriff in town first began to spread last week, when Dan Aykroyd talked about finding a new writer while he was at a signing appearance.

Cohen is certainly credentialed when it comes to blockbuster comedy: he’s either written or contributed to the aforementioned MIB 3, Tropic Thunder, Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa and Idiocracy. Plus his script-doctoring fingerprints are on many other screenplays.

But all that won’t count for much in the eyes of Ghostbusters fans if he doesn’t deliver, and so far the stewing blend of sequel and reboot – with Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson handing over the proton packs to a new, younger generation of spirit catchers – hasn't worked out. Plus there’s the massive stumbling block of Bill Murray, who Sony wants involved and who has seemingly either ignored or rejected previous scripts by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky. Can Cohen stand tall in the face of the Murricane? Keep watching this space...

Ha.
Etan Cohen and Joel Cohen should do something together, just to freak people out. More

RE: The Coen excuse!
Yes, of course, ideally, leave it alone. But if it going to be done anyway, it should either 1) Be made to cater to the largest available market, which is people who saw the films back in the day and those who have grown to love them since (the ONLY reason any interest even exists at all in a 3rd film) or 2) Abandon GB3 and launch a reboot The halfway house idea of passing the torch from older to younger GBs is a 'something for everyone' approach which more likely would e More

RE: The Coen excuse!
Reboot? Passing the torch? Fuck that. How about we get some new ideas and stop arsing about with things that I love? Robocop, Starship Troopers and Total Recall all soon to have their legacy raped. Spiderman rebooted before Raimi's films are even out of nappies. Talk of Top Gun 2, and worse yet, Raging Bull 2. There are many other examples. But fucking about with Ghostbusters? Thats just one step away from rebooting Back To The Future (if this ever happens me and cinema are finis More

Yeah, hiring Cohen to write the script got Murray onboard Garfield. More

RE: The Coen excuse!
Christ's sake, either reboot totally and weather the (now obligatory) storm of fan-rage or write a story that capitalises on the age of the GB's and ISN'T a passing of the torch movie. such ideas ALWAYS TURN OUT TO BE SHIT because they can't satisfy either the long term fans willing to spend a bit more time with beloved characters or the new fans they're hoping to attract, who might not have the nostalgia factor the film would hope to raise from the almost dead. Indy 4 would have been more More
