Fassbender Attached To Assassin's Creed
Set to star and co-produce

09 July 2012  |  Written by Ali Plumb  |  Source: Variety

After a tortured period of to-ing and fro-ing between studio Sony and game publisher Ubisoft, Michael Fassbender is officially on board to star and co-produce a cinematic adaptation of the immensely popular Assassin's Creed gaming franchise. It's a shot in the arm for the creators who, after rejecting Sony, have been without an official studio home.

Fassbender will be taking on the role of Desmond Miles - originally voiced by Nolan North, the man behind Uncharted's Nathan Drake and many more - as well as his bloodletting ancestors. The plot in of itself is still unconfirmed, but it looks set to hit the screen, big studio backing or not.

For anyone unaware of Assassin's Creed's set-up, the games' stories revolve around an unassuming barman drawn into a fantastical world of assassins' guilds. Travelling through history, he's asked to relive his ancestor's lives through the magic of cutting-edge DNA technology.

The creative forces behind the 30 million-selling gaming series have so far pushed back again the traditional studio system, keen to keep more control of the film's story, whether its setting be that of the first game's medieval period, the second's Renaissance or the upcoming third title's American Revolution.

"Michael Fassbender was our first choice" Jean-Julien Baronnet, CEO of the specially-founded Ubisoft Motion Pictures, tells Variety. "He's an extremely smart, talented, versatile and committed actor."

"We're open to re-discuss with the key studios once the production package is finalised," Baronnet adds. Other games on the fledging studios cinematic adaptation wishlist include the similarly popular Tom Clancy series.

Whether this will be another franchise as (financially) successful as Resident Evil or another unfortunate one-off à la Hitman, Max Payne and Doom, remains to be seen, with no fixed release date announced as yet.

RE: Fassbender Attached To Assassin's Creed
LOL. Does anyone actually play Assassin's Creed for the story or characters? The sci-fi framing is head-slammingly godawful and the main character is a dick. More

RE: Another bullshit videogame adaptation
L: Pelle So Fassbender want's to make money. Fain enogh, but he should've chosen something else than another videogame flop. Not to mention the damage this will do to his career and image. Remember how Angelina Jolie, Mark Wahlberg and Jake Gyllenhaal ruined theirs? i don't think that's true Angelina especially has done a lot since Tomb Raider esp The Changeling with got really good reviews or mr & mrs smith - i think that was pretty succesfull More

Good casting
As casting decisions go this is as smart as casting Tom Cruise as Jack Reacher was dumb. But it still might not be a winner. More

Dont make a T*t of this
Assasins creed the games have a very good narrative and plenty of scope to work as a great film but then again so does the hitman franchise so take your time remember the games and dont make a t*t of the film.......its easy More

Casting
Fassie will be ok as Desmond Miles, but he shouldn't play Altair or Ezio. These characters require a darker actor, preferably arab or Italian. Also, the role of Lucy Stillman MUST be played by Kristen Bell - she owns it for many years now. More

Desmond Miles
If Fassbender is to play Desmond Miles then it can only be set between the Crusade era or Renaissance era! The lead for Assassins Creed 3 is Conner. If done well it SHOULD be awesome! They should make it gritty and leave out the Hollywood Bull and Polish that make films BAD!! More

This is not needed...
Eurgh an inevitable cinematic adaptation of assassins creed to bring in even more dollar. The games are epic and awesome enough why should this work. I really hope this doesn't tarnish the Assassins Creed series! More

Maybe!
There's no doubting that Fassbender is a very talented actor but that doesn't mean that this is going to be a winner. As we know, any film that has been adapted from a video game has been a pretty shoddy affair, probably Prince of Persia is the better of the bunch but that's not saying much! Either a disaster or the one that will change game to movie adapts, only time will tell! More

Just don't get Uwe-freakin'-Boll to direct and it should be safe. That Fassbender sees enough in it to produce as well as act gives me comfort. More

Could work.
Unlike most video games, Assassins Creed has a fairly original and unique setting with plenty of scope for a franchise of films set in differing ages, also Fassbender is perfect casting. More

That's a promising start..
but the real news will be the writer, and the director. Fassbender alone wont be able to make this escape video game movie hell. More
