First Shot Of Cruise As Reacher Is Here
Exclusive: Chris McQuarrie talks Reacher

27 June 2012  |  Written by Chris Hewitt  |  Source: Exclusive

submit to reddit

Itinerant megabadass Jack Reacher, a modern-day ronin with a head like the inside of a Swiss watchmaker's studio and a thirst for justice, is coming - scratch that, storming - towards our screens. And we have the first shot of Tom Cruise as Lee Child's iconic hero, from the forthcoming movie of the same name (Jack Reacher, not Lee Child's Iconic Hero).

What's more, if you pick up the new issue of Empire, in which the shot made its debut, you can read the thoughts of Cruise and McQuarrie on the challenges of bringing Child's bone-crunching badass to the big screen. And yes, McQuarrie talks about the disparity in size from the Reacher of the books. "That's to confuse character with characteristics," laughs McQuarrie. "I don't think there was a Wolverine that satisfied the fans, and there wasn't a Jason Bourne that matched everyone's interpretations. Right from the outset, I thought, 'let's get the character down on paper' and then see who's the best person to bring the movie forward."

Empire Magazine's Bourne Legacy Cover

For more from McQuarrie and Cruise on Jack Reacher, from the decision to make One Shot (the ninth Reacher book) Reacher's big screen debut ("It's the one movie where the story starts before Reacher enters") and the casting of Werner Herzog as the bad guy, The Zec ("I wanted him to feel like he was a real monster!") and, indeed, Reacher's brutal physicality ("He is absolutely ruthless and devastating"), pick up the new issue of Empire (now on sale for print and iPad).

You can also head over to last year's Lee Child's webchat transcript for the thoughts of the Reacher author on Cruise and the movie itself.

Jack Reacher is out on December 28.

Cruise -Reacher?
I have read the books and think this is the worse decision i have ever heard for a casting for a film , why do people think Tom Cruise is such a big box office draw?, this film will flop with him as Reacher because people like me who love the books wont go and see a dwarf as Reacher. When i first heard of Cruise being cast as him i thought sense would come to pass , wow Mr Childs the worse mistake of your life , these books are amazing and from day one of reading them i though these books woul More

Where is the BANE DEBATE???
The problem is that if Reacher fans vote with their feet and Cruise fans do the same, the studio makes money...that's just the sad truth of the matter...eg.Constantine...The Mask...I doubt anyone will bat (heh) an eyelid at Bane in Batman Begins...Bane, 6' 8"...Tom Hardy 5' 9...where's the debate on that one then??? Wow, look at the amount of perspective they have had to use to make Tom Cruise look taller than the girl supposedly standing next to him!!! More

Posted by clarkkent >> So Jack Reacher looks like... Tom Cruise. Great. I just did a quickie google of "Jack Reacher" thinking in my head it's another comic book type character and I would find a cartoon character image of Jack .... instead I found a bunch of pics of Cruise! Pfft! More

CRUISE AS REACHER IS A REACH?
Shows how out of the loop I am... I didn't even know there was a 'Reacher' film in the pipeline, let alone that Tom Cruise had got the role! My first thought, I have to admit, is that Tom Cruise would not have been my first choice to play Jack Reacher. Granted, it's a while since I read a Reacher book, but I seem to remember him as being rather tall and fair-haired - not *ahem* under six foot and dark-haired. However.... I'm well aware that trying to live up to the millions of rea More

Maybe 15 years ago, but not now...
I do get the comments on his physical appearance - a lot is made of Reacher's appearance in the books and Cruise matches precisely none of them - but even aside from that I don't think you can sell this. The last time Cruise was any good was seven years ago in War of the Worlds (no, leaping off stuff in the MIs doesn't count), and his last film absolutely stunk. I think it's being charitable to him to say that he's coming to the end of his life as a credible gritty action figure, and casting a More

WTF
Here we go again with the Tom Cruise is all wrong etc, all I can say, is Tom Cruise actually tall enough to have made the Army?!!! Also, looks like his nose has been broken at some stage of his life, which Reacher's hadn't in this film/book. His clothes look really new too! Seriously, if you are a fan of the Jack Reacher novels, vote with your feet when it comes out. More

Just wrong.....
Cruise is completely the wrong choice to play Reacher. It feels like a vanity exercise on Cruise's part and plain 'cashing the cheque' on Child's part. As a fan of the books I won't be going to see the movie even if the reviews are kind. I hope other Reacher fans will avoid it too so that next time round we get the right casting! More

Selling out....
I think Lee Child has sold out his character, there are plently of actors that would fit the desciption of Reacher so much better than Cruise ever will. I for one would have chosen Chris Hemsworth if they wanted an established name to ensure bums on cinema seats. More

I really wish...
that The Rock had gotten this part. Ok he doesn't fit all of the physical profile, but he does seem to be a lot closer to it than Cruise. In addition, I can really see him spitting out some of Reacher's one-liners and fits his tone of voice too. In any case, we're stuck with Cruise so let's at least see what he has to offer. He might surprise everyone. More

I remember the fuss when he played LeStat and look how that turned out. I agree when they fuck with your character to such an extent it fucks you off as a fan, I wasn't too happy with Constantine but face it Cruise doesn't make too many bad films (yeah I know, insert the odd exception here) so take that as a plus point and wait and see! Questionable Choice of Actor?

Why Cruise Again!!!
This annoying man seems to turn up in just about every fucking film lately! He loves himself so much it makes me feel sick! Collateral is the only role I liked him in because he was actually a bad guy for a change and got killed at the end :-)! There are a whole army of better actors out there that bury this guy at acting and would do a much better job! More

Eyes Wide Shut
A lot of Jack Reacher book fans are dumping on the film and Tom Cruise before they've even seen him in it. Give it a chance, you might be surprised. I haven't read the books, so I don't have this sense of entitlement or ownership that the readers do and can come into it without prejudice. Tom Cruise is the biggest star in the world, you can't really blame the author for his casting. Any author would want a huge star in the movie adaptation of their book. More

How big?
I've never read any Jack Reacher, but from what i've heard he's similar to Clancy's John Kelly before he becomes Clarke. In other words a big hard b*****d who won't take any crap. Now I liked Cruise in Collateral as the emotionless gun for hire. But not sure he'll be right for this roll. More

@ mclane1
Its obvious you have never read the Reacher series. Us fans know that Tom is not fit for this part and it has nothing to do with scienctology, or his filn career. Even looking at the photo of " reacher" above, even that shot is too clean cut to be the Reacher we all know. Sorry its going to be sad if this Lee Childs story flops based on Tom as all the books in the Jack Reacher series are very good reads More

looks fine to me
who gives a shit if he's short- hes a f!#cking superstar! cant wait. Just cause the guy has loads of money due to hugely popular movies where he acts and produces pretty darn well and has charisma a plenty- give the guy a break, scientology aside hes a pretty cool dude and any true movie lover would at least respect where he has got himself over the years and his contribution to popular cinema. There's nothing bold about Ethan Hunt. It's a money role. Cruise can act, and picks good projects when wants to. It will earn serious money either way, but these days fans like to see literary film adaps as close to the books as possible. More
