It's that time again: a new issue of Empire is almost upon us (Thursday June 28, to be precise), and this month's issue sees Jeremy Renner and The Bourne Legacy headlining a jam-packed, action-focused explosion of a magazine.
Empire's Bourne Legacy Cover
Exclusive Subscribers-Only Cover
We travelled to LA recently to shoot Renner and get the lowdown on the new Bourne movie. How do you carry on without, y'know, Jason Bourne? Well, writer/director Tony Gilroy has a plan - and a Shakespearean analogy for what you're going to see.
"If you think of the first three Bourne films as Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, then we're showing you Elsinore. You thought you were seeing something you weren't. What if there's a much larger story? What if Treadstone wasn't the only black-ops programme?
"I had never spent one moment thinking about how to do a sequel to Bourne Ultimatum. I first came in for two weeks just to spitball. I had a very random idea...so we started with that and it got more and more exciting. All of a sudden I was staring at something that had a great deal of resonance and was soulful and uncynical and was also gonna kick ass. So that was good."
And what about new lead character Aaron Cross? Renner says, "He's coming from a completely different background to Jason [Bourne]. He knows exactly who he is; he signed up to this...He wants to be part of a team. I can tell you he was in the military then he joined the programme. He's a person who wants to be part of something... to have a sense of purpose. But then it's taken away."
Most intriguingly of all, producer Frank Marshall says, "You see there are several different programmes in the movie with different skill sets. All possibilities are open. My dream is that in the next one we see Matt and Jeremy team up."
As a treat, here's a couple of exclusive stills from our shoot with Jeremy Renner. For many more, pick up the new issue of Empire.
The Bourne Legacy is out on August 13, and you can read much more about it - including a few wise words from Edward Norton on his role - in the new issue of Empire, which hits shelves on Thursday, and also contains in-depth features on Gangster Squad, Lawless, Paul Verhoeven and Rachel Weisz, as well as a first look at The Great Gatsby and Dredd.

RE: Yikes
Seriously fellas, get over yourselves.
You've had months on end, as another poster has already said, of men in tights on the cover, and just because Jeremy Renner is shooting you a look you can't be seen with the magazine in public. Insecure much? More
Surprised about that considering so little has been talked about it in these forums.
Though saying that you may aswell have Matt's Jason Bourne on the cover as he's nearly all they seem to mention in the bloody trailer 5 times & his photo plastered on a news segment.
Now if one was of a certain mind they may think they're trying to fool some people into thinking it's a totally different movie? Surely not More

Not sure about the subscribers cover. It does look like a gentlemen's special interest mag, which I'm finding a bit embarrassing on the bus. What I'm particularly surprised about is that it doesn't seem to have much to do with the film. At least on the normal highstreet version Renner appears to be in character. The subscriber version doesn't look like it's got anything to do with Bourne at all, which feels like a shame from Empire.
If they didn't have a decent second shot of Renner in characte More
It would appear I share the option of a number of other subscribers... While at first glance the subscriber cover would appear more classy than its regular counterpart, i then half began to expect the opening article to be 'ten tips to Jeremy renner's triceps' More
I am totally willing to buy the 'normal' issue in store and swap it with someone who has a subscription to get the one with the 'special' cover! Anyone?? The 'special' cover looks kick *ss and I can send it to you on Thursday. More
The subscribers cover looks like Creme magazine. Also why do the Australian mags always have crap covers?:( I'm in NZ & I miss out on the cool Bane & Bond subscribers covers and the Batman double covers bane/Batman & Batman/Catwoman. Very traumatised by this. More

Interesting to read that Matt Damon didn't like Gilroy's first draft of the Ultimatum script - had never realised that. More

Definite reservations about this - Gilroy will have to turn the style and action way up from Duplicity - but Renner stands a chance of carrying it. Oh, and *Guildenstern* More
