Dredd Trailer Rides In
Judgment time...

22 June 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Machinma

submit to reddit

It’s been a long time coming (which, frankly, has us worried), but the first proper trailer for Dredd, featuring Karl Urban as the world’s gruffest lawman, has finally arrived and you can have a peek below.

Dredd, for anyone unfamiliar with 2000AD’s most famous creation (sorry, Strontium Dog), finds the future Earth a ruined, apocalyptic wasteland. Humanity survives in towering, crowded Mega Cities. One such place – spanning the area between Washington and Boston – is Mega City One, loaded with violence, crime, drugs and death.

The only people who can keep order in a place like this are the Judges, highly trained and extremely dangerous cops who serve as judge, jury and executioner when needed. And the toughest of them all is Judge Dredd (Urban).

But when he’s tasked with training and evaluating new recruit Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a seemingly routine day turns into a nightmare when they answer a call to investigate the high rise slum ruled with an iron fist by drug maven Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) it’s not going to be an easy place to take down, since she has a throng of thugs ready to stand in their way.

This one certainly looks like it’ll be better than the Sly Stallone effort, though it’s tough to judge (har har) from one trailer. It’s unfortunate that it seems to feature a similar plot to sensational action pic The Raid, but hopefully there's enough of the Dredd feel that it’ll stand on its own. And Urban certainly has the grouchy tone to a tee…

Dredd arrives on September 7.

looks ok to me so far and there is no way in hell it can be as bad as stallones turgid tragedy. There is at least a Mega City feel about it, huge yet claustraphobic and dark. If it does reasonably well maybe we'll see more Dredd with more money and time thrown at him. More

Disappointing.
This seems like a very disappointing trailer to me. It lacks any Dark Knight feel and seems more like a trailer for a straight to DVD type movie. I think they may have shown too much and too soon. More

Already looks 10x better than 95
This looks good, I grew up reading 2000ad and the screenshots look like the comic a lot, yes the city lacks a few superscrapers and multi level freeways but its not bad. And the uniforms are not perfect but are 100x better than the spandex and plastic gold of the 95 dredd, Dredd is a biker, he wears bike leathers. What happened to film fans? seriously people Dredd has been in development since 2008 how can it have ripped off the Raid which started shooting in 2011? and another thing that bothers me, how comes the raid did pretty poor at the box office for such a great film, yet everyone knows its plot? is piracy on this film the biggest ever? or are you all saying it looks like the raid without actually watching the Raid just to appear cool? Mega City
I think from the trailer the city looks to be the problem the whole premises of Mega city 1 is that although it is a sprawling metropolis it is hopelessly over crowded and in order to achieve that you need to introduce a certain level of claustrophobia to get that effect and this city looks too open to give that feel couple that with the fact that it looks too recent and not far enough into the future and it does'nt look like it is going to work...hope i am wrong though... Obviously Judge Death and the Dark Judges would have been preferred but given the tiny (for this type of film anyway) budget it wouldn't have really worked. Hopefully if this takes off they can used in a sequel, maybe an after credits bit with this film of a shadowy figure hissing. got cut off for some reason 6. Anderson. Obviously there to broaden the demographic appeal and balance the faceless presence of Dredd. Not sure if that’s a good thing. Why humanise him by showing how he relates to a rookie – he should be a one man army, an emotionless justice-machine with no sympathetic qualities at all – that’s what makes him a cult anti-hero. Also I’m pretty sure that Anderson won’t be psychic – it doesn’t seem to fit with this Universe, and if that’s the case why use h More

1. La Roux!! AAAAAGGGGGGHHHH!!!! Make it stop. Oh it did. Thank fuck for that. 2. The outfit and the bike - you could say 'realisitic', or you could say 'dull'. But the redesigns are definitely not iconic. Thank god they’ve got the helmet right – and the Lawgiver looks pretty cool too. 3. Mega City One looks disappointingly low budget – it reminds me of District 9. On reflection I suppose this makes sense – if everyone lives in one place because a global catastrophe h More

In terms of how it looks, I like how it has a Mad Max rawness to it. As for the rest? The dialogue already sounds clumsy and laboured. The pacing of the trailer is terrible. It really doesn't feel all that involving. It doesn't have me all riled up to see it. More

Interesting approach.
Seems they've jumped right in with a movie that has Dredd established at the beginning, giving it an episodic quality. This goes against the grain of contemporary reboot/origin approaches so we won't be seeing how Dredd became a Judge. It will be interesting to see how/if they manage to give Dredd a decent character arc. I find Garland hit-and-miss as a writer (I loved Sunshine, though. Tragically overlooked and brilliant movie) so this is definitely a 'wait and see' for me. More

Difficult to see
Oh No! This looks terrible. Mega city one is all flat with the odd tall building, the CGI looks like a computer game, the costumes look too bulky and the helmets too large for the judge's heads. I spotted at once from photos in Empire a few months ago that the eye sections of the helmets don't match where the actor's eyes should be and some are lower, some higher. This makes it look like a one size fits all scenario to save money. The kung fu bit with the "rookie" judge is so slow and More

I like Urban as Dredd from what I've seen. He's got that Dredd downturned-mouth to a tee. Mega City One looks good. Yes, Judge Death is the Darth Vader of the Dredd universe and after two movies, we still haven't seen him and it looks like we never will. The guy playing Dredd in this is nothing to write home about, don't know how he got the part. Stallone was promoting the 1995 Dredd on David Letterman & he asked Stallone who Judge Dredd was and Stallone couldn't answer, I think that's one reason why it flopped. Outfit Wrong
I realise that this issue was discussed some time ago when production pics were released but it still bothers me - Dredd's outfit really feels wrong. Where are the iconic shoulder pads/Eagle pad and chain? It may be impracticle and unreal but so is most of Batman's costume but they keep him in a cape. It can still be made to work cinematically. It isn't terrible but sloping soldiers do not say Dredd. Impossible armoured shoulder pads do. He doesn't seem bulky and square jawed enough either for More

If you really dig into it, there's an accurate script review posted on AICN via Latino Reviews. It's accurate all the way down to the name of the Block in the finished film (Peach Trees). That review is dated July 2010, a whole eight months before the cameras rolled on The Raid in March 2011. Marantau came out in Indonesia in the Summer of 2009. Gareth Evans and crew worked for just over a year on a project called "Barandal", which fell through because they couldn't get the budget. So, if More
