Hugh Laurie May Be Robocop's Villain
UPDATE: He's no longer in talks

26 August 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Variety

Hugh Laurie May Be Robocop's Villain

Update: Though most reports had listed him as on board Variety's Jeff Sneider brings word that Laurie never made a final deal for the movie and is officially off. So now the revoot is looking for a new boss at Omni Corp.

...

He’s ditched the cane and doesn’t have to maintain a near-constant level of scruffy chin stubble, but while Hugh Laurie is no longer playing House he has no plans to get back to bumbling do-gooders just yet. According to Variety, he’s in talks to join the Robocop reboot as the villain of the piece.

The casting for Sony / MGM’s new take on Paul Verhoeven’s sci-fi classic is really shaping up in interesting ways. We already have Joel Kinnaman as Alex Murphy, the cop brutally gunned down and reborn as the cyborg lawman. Gary Oldman is playing a scientist named Norton who helps rebuild Murphy, with Samuel L Jackson taking the role of a powerful, uber-patriotic media mogul. And most recently, Abbie Cornish was offered the part of Murphy’s conflicted wife, struggling with the fact that she’s only about 80% a widow.

Assuming he makes a deal, Laurie will be the moneygrubbing head of Omni Corp (we’re hoping they maintain the Omni Consumer Products name for nostalgia’s sake), the company that creates Robocop to boost their profit margin rather than because of any real worries about crime.

Josh Zetumer wrote the most recent draft of the script, and Jose Padilha is set to start shooting this summer. Laurie will next be seen on the big screen in novel adaptation Mr Pip.

2 things...
1: Hugh Laurie looks like my dad. 2: I can see him as Ronny Cox. Would look perfect! More

I'm glad Hugh Laurie is out, I've never found him convincing as an American. He sounds like a actor trying to do an accent instead of a real character. Stars do plenty of shit films for the money, so don't be fooled by the big names here. It's about quality not quantity. More

Accent
I just hope he plays the part with his own accent rather than the drawl he uses on House. And I think it's "Soapy Twist" not "Soupy". I hope says the immortal line "Once, I even called him a**hole...". More

That could be awesome!
Mr. Laurie could bring a really fresh twist (or should that be 'Soupy Twist'? Arf arf) to it. His sardonic wit would be perfect for an evil exec. and if they can get his musical skills in there as well, then that's even better. More

Hollywood Has A Cancer...
That cancer is duff re-makes. (Does this mean OCP will have a CEO who's a bit of a numpty and the real power behind the throne will be... Rowan Atkinson? Um... The original Man" was clearly meant to be Reagan - seemingly benign old duffer everyone underestimates but is actually evil, evil, EEEEEE-VIIIIIIIIIIIL!!! So shouldn't the new CEO be Anthony Mackie or someone?) More

Okay...
When you mention Robocop you're talking about my favourite film of all time. But I have to say, what I've heard about the script so far filled me with dread. Having said that though. Jackson, Oldman and now Laurie?. The skeleton of the script sounds absolutely awful but the script itself must have something to it otherwise I doubt we'd be getting this much star power. I'm starting to warm to the idea. More
