G.I. Joe: Retaliation Moves To 2013
And now The Rock comments...

24 May 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Moves To 2013

Update: The plot, it thickens. Dwayne Johnson hit the Twits today to respond to a disappointed fan about the move. According to him, the team behind the film are "designing new scenes to enhance 3D." Begin the chorus of concern about sneaky re-shoots!

...

If you were awaiting the arrival of Mr Dwayne Johnson and the rest of the G.I. Joe: Retaliation crew, we have some news you might want to sit down for: they’re not coming this summer. Actually, the entire film is being shifted to March 2013 so that Paramount can run it through the 3D-O-Matic machine. We can hear the complaints even now…

According to Deadline, one studio exec explained the move thusly: "We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic‘s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.” Well, at least they were honest about the reason. But it won't stop anyone thinking that there's more to it than that...

The movie had been scheduled to arrive on June 29 across the pond and August 3 here. While the shift means a March 29, 2013 release in the US, we don’t yet know what that means for the UK – but we imagine it will arrive around the same time.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation is directed by John M Chu and features Johnson, Bruce Willis, Channing Tatum, Adrianne Palicki, Jonathan Pryce, Byung-hun Lee, Elodie Yung, Arnold Vosloo and DJ Cotrona.

t on a film programme on radio might've been Front Row or Kermode & Mayo can't remember which & sorry should've said the total mentioned was for the UK my bad . But looked it up & according to pofodder.com Toy Story3 & Kung Fu Panda were also out performed, so who's telling the truth because as we know the film companies wouldn't lie about a thing like this WOULD THEY??? espicable Me was £14m of it's £20m in 3D (UK). Toy Story 3 was £55m of it's £74m in 3D. Kung Fu Panda 2 was a lot More

Fucking ridiculous decision on paramounts part.I was looking forward to this film but will not bother now.Another reason why people should stop buying tickets for 3D showings of movies. Imagine if it had been The Dark Knight Rises that had been pushed back til next year for '' post 3d conversion ''.The internet would have exploded once the news broke! More

RE: G.I. Joe: Retaliation Moves To 2013
I hate to be that guy who pre-judges films, but this seems like Paramount know they have a bit of a stinky flop on their hands and they're trying to squeeze as much money from it as possible by retro-fitting it in 3D. I know this theory completely goes against my "wait until the film comes out" philosophy, but I think it's really odd to postpone it so soon before the original US release date. More

L: Wild about Wilder Ok so why were nearly all Potter showings in 2d for the 1st couple of weeks nearly all sold out where 3d wasn't & Desbicable Me 2D out performed it completly? ot sure where you're getting your numbers from. Despicable Me took about 75% of it's box office in 3D. More

It'll be interesting to see what happens at my world of Cine after next week as only 2!!! showings of M.I.B 3 on 1 screen (in a 15 screen theartre) all day were there's about 3 or 4 screens showing 3D ? now that's a first & is in my opinion (apart from being WELL DODGY!) the start of a slippery slope. RE: RE:
L: warren7355 Does anyone have any figures for how much 3D actually makes over 2D? I suspect that the vastly inflated ticket prices have alot to do with it... D outperforms 2D on both Box Office and Attendance. If it was just down the ticket price then it wouldn't outperform on Attendance. Cinemas would be dumb if they didn't book 3D in line with audience demand, and the demand is for 3D more than 2D. On kids films the mix is about 50/50 but on the big blockbusters it's rarely More

That's not why it's delayed.
Come on, Paramount, who are you kidding? The reason why this has been put back is because of Mr. Nolan and WB. The Dark Knight Rises is expected to take over a billion dollars (the conservative estimate is 1.1) and GI Joe was scheduled to come out 2-3 weeks after THAT? Seriously? The 'Joe' franchise is expected to succeed but the first one took less than its budget in the US and only $300M worldwide (I could be off on the numbers but you get what I mean). That sort of money could easily be sucke More

Sounds fine
For all that the internet is full of noisy people who like to loudly proclaim how rubbish 3D is, the box office results suggest that they're the minority. 3D is struggling a little on family films but looks to have found it's level, while on adult/action titles it's always been pretty strong (the exceptions being where popular franchises switch into 3D, because it's hard to convince that audience they'll only like the film in 3D). Plus July was hardly a great time to put this mov More

Running Scared
Hrm. Methinks in the summer of critically acclaimed The Avengers, (and sure to be acclaimed The Dark Knight Rises) they realised that there was no room for this one - could it be because of the quality of the film? Perhaps they realised and moved it to a much less competitive slot so as to maximise their profits with a discerning movie-going crowd. I reckon, two stars Empire? More

3D is already dead...
There were exactly TWO movies in the past 3 years that had staggering 3D effects (AVATAR and TRON LEGACY). The bloody rest of the 3D movie bunch sucked or didn't need to be in 3D at all. Even THE AVENGERS (which has solid 3D effects) does not need to be 3D. Then again, who cares about G.I. Joe? (Even with Willis in it) More

With lessthan 5 weeksto go till release
To delay the film 9 months to convert it into 3D this is total madness. I'm sure its more likely after Battleship flopping in the US they were scared that this will flop too, and their big idea is to push the release back 9 months and convert it into 3D! To delay a film several months before the release date ok that makes sense Paramount have done that with World War Z, Star Trek 2 & Hansel & Gretel but to delay a film within weeks of its release is completely insane. The first GI More

Idiot Execs!
3D films don't make money because they're in 3D, they make money because they're excellent i.e. The Avengers. I was looking forward to this in a 'know it'll be crap but hell its got the Rock and Bruce' guilty pleasure way but I'm now officially out. More

One thing........
The exec expects the 3D conversion to be done well, they have to remember with Cameron's pointless conversion of Titanic that he spent $18m and spent at least two full years to convert it. With GI Joe, even though the movie looks incredibly insane, like Lurhman's Great Gatsby movie, 3D as Dr.Kermode puts it, is just a gimmick. I can't honestly see how it will help the box office receipts in March, surely they could have sorted out on wanting a 3D conversion halfway through Post-production and co More
