There have been pictures, but now prepare to get your first proper look at Baz Luhrmann’s take on F Scott Fitzgerald’s classic tale of toffs, tattle-tales and tragedy, The Great Gatsby. Yes, the trailer is here, and Apple’s site requests the pleasure of your company to take a look.
Luhrmann has rounded up a cast that includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Jason Clarke, Isla Fisher, and Callan McAuliffe for what looks like a sumptuous take on Fitzgerald’s tale.
The plot finds aspiring writer Nick Carraway (Maguire) pitching up in New York and beyond in the spring of 1922 and becoming drawn into the mysterious, decadent and party-heavy world of Jay Gatsby (DiCaprio). This is the playground of the super-rich, flush with cash yet endlessly bored with life and looking for the next diversion. But there is still passion here, and betrayal, and soon death will come calling.
This is Luhrmann on full visual power and typically modern soundtracking, with the trailer mostly focused on the jewel-bedecked soirees, but also peeking at the darker nooks and crannies of the story. We’ll get to see if he’s pulled the whole thing off when the film arrives (in 3D) on December 26.
