Universal Eyes Kick-Ass 2
Update: The cast are all in talks now

31 May 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: Deadline

Universal Eyes Kick-Ass 2

Update: Deadline reports that Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are all now close to deals to return. And from the sounds of it, Nic Cage it itching to pop in for what must surely be a flashback cameo...

There are some sequels that really aren’t surprising, like today’s announcement that Disney is officially at work on Avengers 2. But there are those that seemed a lot less likely but suddenly, shockingly come into focus. Case in point? Universal is officially in talks to make Kick-Ass 2.

Mark Millar comes in for a lot of stick in some corners for prematurely announcing developments on adaptations of his comics. Indeed, he’s been labelled as the boy who cried Wolverine on more than one occasion. But it turns out we all just had to have a little bit of faith on this one.

Cry Wolf writer-director Jeff Wadlow, who has been writing the script under the direction of Millar and original Kick-Ass director Matthew Vaughn, will be stepping up to call the shots on the eventual project as Vaughn will be very slightly busy elsewhere in the superhero community, gearing up the X-Men: First Class sequel. But he'll naturally be involved as a producer.

Though he’s currently setting up to make air marshal thriller Non-Stop, Wadlow and co have apparently already put the new Kick-Ass script in front of Universal executives, who are hammering out a deal to get it shooting in August, assuming everything works out.

The big question for now is the cast, including Aaron Johnson, Chloe Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who have all gone on to busy careers (particularly Moretz) and may need time to clear space in their diaries.

So while it’s not 100% all locked in yet, this is the closest we’ve come to getting the thing rolling. It may not have seemed like the original did enough box office to warrant a sequel, but making $103 million worldwide from a $28 million budget is nothing to be sniffed at. Plus, it became a cult favourite, with a big following itching to see more about Dave Lizewski, Mindy Macready and the rest...

Can't Wait!!!
Love the hugely popular first one and can't wait for the sequel! More

The first one is a gem!
Had to go the theatre by myself because I couldn't convince anyone to go with me. Then when it came out on disc people were all over it. I reminded them they didn't want to see it at the time (everyone should listen to me *joke*). If the script is as cool, funny, sardonic and morally vacuous (which I LIKE) as the first one I can see this taking a lot more money than its predecessor. More

Cage!
Cage, with his adam west nonsense, was definitely a highlight. They can't bring him back, but if they could, they would :) More

Oh right, then someone should tell them to not bother. I mean, sure, there might be some of us who want a sequel, but since you're alright without one, lets just let them ditch it... More

Bring Back The Cage!
Don't care how stupid they do; resurrection or fake death scenario, but they need to get Big Daddy back for this to work! More

meh
Kick-Ass was an interesting movie but like all Millar's stuff seems to have an absolute moral vacuum at its heart. Not sure I'm that bothered about going there again... More

More Moretz
I only saw Kick-Ass for the first time in February. Chloe Moretz still looked like a kid in it. Look at her now getting all tall and womanly-looking. Will be weird seeing her in that costume again, but she was so good in the first one that I wouldn't mind. More

WOO-HOO!!! ALL RIGHT!!!
I don't care what some people said about KICK-ASS (2010). It was one of the most wildly entertaining films in a long time and the fact it has gained a strong cult following. I'm glad they're doing a sequel at last. Not sure about about Jeff Wadlow directing, but as long as Matthew Vaughn is producing and co-scripting, then at least it will be in safe hands. All we have to do know is wait to see if the surviving cast members, including the wonderful Chloe Moretz, will return. More

I hope Wadlow is as successful as Vaughan/Goldman in removing much of the comic's unpleasant misanthropy. More

I'm all for a Kick Ass sequel more than anyone
but without Vaughn directing I have some pretty big doubts that this will have the same quality as the first film. More

Kick-Ass
Kick-Ass is all kinds of subversive, nasty, delicious, sizzling goodiness, a unique modern classic. I think a sequel to match the brilliance of the original would be tough work. They'll have to introduce a few new players, and if the scrit stays sharp I'd love to see it. More
