Sabrina The Rebooted Teenage Witch
Sony plan new 'makeover'...

12 April 2012  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Deadline

Sabrina The Rebooted Teenage Witch

She's been a comic, a cartoon series and a sit-com, and Sabrina The Teenage Witch is now heading for a movie makeover, courtesy of Sony Pictures. Don Murphy and Susan Montford, part of the team behind Real Steel, will produce.

The idea is to re-imagine the story of the little witch girl along Spider-Man lines, with an 'edgy' origin story about Sabrina coming to terms with her new-found wiccan abilities. Sabrina's black cat Salem, originally presented as a former warlock, will in the new version be a transformed handsome prince. Which doesn't sound as edgy as all that.

Sabrina made her debut in the wholesome Archie comics in the late 1960s, and her print adventures are still ongoing. There have also been three animated TV series, but Sabrina is perhaps best-known now for the seven-year live-action run on ABC, starring Melissa Joan Hart. You guys on the Empire forum voted it your 73rd favourite kids show of all time last year.

Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari will be writing the screenplay, and the presentation made to Sony involved Mark Waters (Mr Popper's Penguins) who may or may not stick around to direct, depending on his schedule.

Sabrina is a now a fast-track priority for the studio, so the search is on for the perfect actress to wear the freckles. As always, give us your suggestions in the comments below.
