Mel Gibson's Maccabee Movie On Hold
Warners has rejected the script

12 April 2012  |  Written by James White  |  Source: The Wrap

Mel Gibson's Maccabee Movie On Hold

Things seemed to be looking up for Mel Gibson last year a little. Despite his starring role in The Beaver coming and going from cinemas without much impact, he was at least forging ahead with a new project that, he hoped, might restore some of his personal reputation after accusations of anti-Semitism. But while the biopic of Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee had been developing slowly over at Warner Bros., the studio has now rejected the script, leaving the project in limbo.

Basic Instinct / Jade writer Joe Eszterhas had been toiling away on the screenplay which saw an underdog army fighting for freedom against oppression, which is definitely in Gibson’s comfort zone. In 165 BC, Jewish leader Maccabee led his brothers in revolt against the Seleucid Empire, ruled by Antiochus Epiphanes who had forbidden Jewish practices. Full of spirit and triumph, it was, as Eszterhas remarked later last year, the chance for a Braveheart-scale epic drawn from Jewish history. But he’s since launched an angry screed at Mel, complaining that Gibson's the real reason the film has stalled.

The studio has only commented that it is analysing its options about what to do with the project and that the current draft didn’t pass muster. Given the outcry from Jewish groups and the Anti-Defamation League over the idea in the first place, there’s a chance it’ll linger in limbo unless some other company decides to pick it up. However it ends up, it appears this latest attempt at PR and career resuscitation isn’t working out quite like Mel Gibson hoped.

RE: Mel Gibson + Jewish Hero = Instant Controversy
By all accounts it sounds like Eszterhas is as unhinged as Gibson himself. The fact that at the end of the rant he says he still wants to continue working with Mel is strange in itself. More

RE: Mel Gibson + Jewish Hero = Instant Controversy
Whilst Gibson is crazy, it was the studio that rejected the script. This rant seems like that of someone who can't accept that his work hasn't been greeted with adoration. Possibly to stir up interest, who knows? More

Mel Gibson + Jewish Hero = Instant Controversy
Mel is trying too hard to suck up to the Jews with this movie. I don't think his career will ever recover from the damage that outburst of his caused and all that stuff he said on tape to that Russian chick he was with. Mel has his own production company, couldn't he raise the money himself? More

Do these "Jewish groups" realise they are acting in exactly
the manner they accuse Mel Gibson of? The hypocrisy sickens me. More
