While it would seem that Woody Allen has been using his recent filmmaking career to set off, like so many American students, on a tour of Europe, it has produced a few solid movies, most recently Midnight In Paris. Now his passport has been stamped in Italy, with the trailer for To Rome With Love arriving. Have a look below.
Allen has so far kept the full plot details under wraps, but this footage gives us a bit more of a glimpse into the overlapping storylines promised by his latest romantic comedy drama.
Among the characters is Jesse Eisenberg (who faces the tricky task of effectively being the Woody substitute in a film where Allen himself also appears; wonder if they ever meet and cease to exist, a la Timecop?) He’s a young man showing his father (Alec Baldwin) around his local digs. But he’s also dealing with the arrival of his girlfriend (Greta Gerwig)’s best friend (Ellen Page) and the conflicted feelings that brings up. Penelope Cruz, meanwhile, is a beautiful escort who makes one man’s dreams come true, while Roberto Benigni appears to be playing a version of himself called Leopold, thrust into sudden fame and not particularly thrilled about it. It all looks fun and frothy, and will hopefully maintain the standard of Paris.
To Rome With Love arrives in the US on 22 June, but there has been no UK release date announced yet.
