New Tenacious D Short Online
Jack and Kyle return to rock your socks

27 March 2012  |  Written by Owen Williams  |  Source: Vevo (via Collider)

New Tenacious D Short Online

We're calling this movie news because, like, there was a movie a few years ago. What we actually have here is a new short film from rock gods of awesomeness Tenacious D (namely Jack Black and Kyle Gass), promoting comeback album Rise Of The Fenix, which is out in May.

All great bands fade and then make comebacks, so at this point, it's nice to think that The Pick Of Destiny, the double team's epic fail from 2006, was part of their whole meta thang, paving the way for this moment where they could rise from the ashes. You couldn't split up Kato and Nash, and you couldn't split up Tango and Cash. This is their time of exultant joy. They only came to kick some ass.

To Be The Best is effectively an extended trailer for the album, taking the form of a documentary special about where they've been. Black has been ruling Hollywood, obviously, but poor KG has been in a mental home. The film charts Rage Kage's journey from release to rehabilitation through the power of montage. Look out for cameos from Dave Grohl, Tim Robbins, Josh Groban and, best of all, a heroic Val Kilmer. Prepare yourself for pathos, suspense, action, and a great beard gag. Do not expect any inward singing or cock pushups.

Their original HBO shorts were great, and the first album managed to properly be funny and properly rock. Here's hoping Rise Of The Fenix will see them soaring on the wings of eagles again. Or something.

And by the way, if you've never seen The D performing You're The One That I Want, featuring a guest performance by Andy Serkis in character as Gollum... now would be the time.
