Michael Bay Talks Ninja Turtles Outcry
'Fans need to take a breath, and chill'

Michael Bay Talks Ninja Turtles Outcry

Never one to shy away from defending his position or arguing a point, Michael Bay has waded into the firestorm of debate he himself touched off over the weekend when he talked up Platinum Dunes’ plans for the new live-action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film, which included the nugget that they’re from an “alien race”. Since he dropped that knowledge, the ‘net has been abuzz with those outraged at the idea. Now Bay has put his own opinion in, telling fans to “chill”.

This all started at the weekend, when Bay told the audience at a Nickelodeon presentation that the new outing would change the way we see Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo and Raphael forever. "When we are done with this movie, kids are going to believe, one day, that these turtles actually do exist. These turtles are from an alien race and they are going to be tough, edgy, funny and completely lovable."

Predictably, announcing that they planned to shift the Turtles’ origin from their radioactive ooze accident caused plenty of complaints, prime among them being from Robbie Rist, who voiced Michelangelo in the 1990 live-action pic, who dragged out the old chestnut about our collective childhoods being attacked.

So Bay has decided to hit back, taking to his usual venue – his own website’s forum – to offer some advice. "Fans need to take a breath, and chill. They have not read the script. Our team is working closely with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles to help expand and give a more complex back story. Relax, we are including everything that made you become fans in the first place. We are just building a richer world."

It remains to be seen whether anyone is mollified by Bay’s reaction. And, yes, tinkering with the foursome's origin could be a dreadful decision. But there’s still a chance this could still turn out as a great new take on the Turtles. Your thoughts, folks?

This costume just came out and it's supposed to be hinting the new look of the turtles in the upcoming movie. What do you guys think? Looks pretty bad to me! http://www.teenagemutantninjaturtles.com/blog/costume-r eveals-the-first-looks-of-the-movie-turtles/ More

I maybe mistaken but I thought the script got leaked and panned. It will come as no surprise Bay's Turtles follow the same structure as his Transformers films. The script reviewer mention the turtles didn't play a huge role in the script , instead focus on Cassy Jones and his love interest April. More

RE: Michael Bay Talks Ninja Turtles Outcry
A proper Turtles film should be similar in tone and look to the early comics. A dark, gritty, R-rated noire shot in B&W (ala Sin City) with extreme martial arts action similar to The Raid. And the Turtles should be rendered digitally using the latest in motion performance technology, personally overseen by Andy Serkis and directed by Nicholas Winding Refn on a budget of no more than $100m to guarantee the rating. Yeah, fuck you Bay! More

L: Discodez TNMT was fucking rubbish anyway (both the films and the cartoon) so Bay coming along and smearing his shit all over it isn't going to hurt it that much anyway. Way out of line, mate.. the TMNT are by far some of the finest super heroes/fictional characters ever created. I mean really, when you think of the cultural impact of the original turtle comics, its incredible. No doubt more people around the globe can name all the turtles than could name the core members o More

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are going to be aliens...
But what about Splinter? As they're not mutants, where will Splinter come from? Will he be some sort of rat/alien? Will they lose the Japanese connection? Are they still ninjas without it? Will they also lose their Japanese weaponry? Would an alien rat name them after renaissance artists from earth? Will alien turtles even like pizza? I'm thinking way too much about this... More

Couple of things...
Firstly, audiences will eat up whatever Bay does because they love his work. Critics be damned. This is exactly what happened when he reinvented Transformers. Secondly, it's probably just the ooze which is alien ... like the symbiote in Spider-Man 3. Earth turtles plus alien ooze equals mutated half-alien turtles. It's not, by any means, rocket science. It's movie science. More
