The Avengers Gets A New, Longer Title
Marvel Avengers Assemble, it seems

28 February 2012  |  Written by Helen O'Hara  |  Source: Disney

Its only two months until release, but The Avengers has just received a title change, at least as far as the UK is concerned. We will now be queuing up on April 26 to see Marvel Avengers Assemble. And theres a new poster to prove the change.

The 11th hour alteration is all to avoid UK audiences confusing the film with either the 1960s TV series of the same name or its less-than-stellar 1998 film adaptation. Presumably the studio has done marketing proving that theres bewilderment out there about it, and certainly for a slightly older generation the name still calls up John Steed and Emma Peel rather than Iron Man, Thor, Hulk and all.

Still, is it us, or does the new film name cry out for extra punctuation? Wouldnt it be awesomer if it were Marvel! Avengers Assemble? After all, thats the reaction theyre hoping for. It also reminds us of this blog we wrote about movie titles a few years back.

In any case, the film still comes out on April 26, is still directed by Joss Whedon and still stars Robert Downey Jr, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Renner, Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg and Tom Hiddleston.

Theyre all pretty cool. Were sure they wont mind if we keep referring to it as The Avengers in casual conversation now and again. While the issue of Empire with our exclusive set-visit coverage has now disappeared from newsagents, you can still get your hands on it in the iTunes store if youre lucky enough to have an iPad.

its just an attempt at more publicity f course it's not. It isn't the first time a title has changed to accommodate a certain country, it happens all the time. I think this time it's a but silly, sure, but it's not a publicity stunt. More

Seems A Bit Odd...
When there's no copyright on titles. Mind you, that's not what George Lucas' lawyers said when a script I wrote called "The Star Wars" earned me a cease and desist order. Still, can't wait to see these posters inevitably defaced on bus stops to read "Avengers Ass Rumble," "Avengers Assh*les" and the like. Has anyone got a Sharpie...? More

I can't even work up the energy to say much about this, but I just wanted to state for the record that I find the marketing for this movie to be cheap looking and dull. I have a feeling this might well bomb, or at least severely underperform. This whole project feels so soulless and corporate, and even on this poster, the scale of destruction gives the distinct impression that we're seeing the maximum number of explosions the penny pinchers at Marvel were willing to pay for. It's not even inter More

RE: no way
Had to google it, but TV The Avengers began in 1961, comic The Avengers, 1963. Would be odd for anything to be about copyright after nearly 50 years of co-existence, and claiming copyright on a title is pretty hard to back up anyway, unless it's a very specific phrase or completely made up word(s) that the person being sued is being accused of trying to associate their stuff with. The and Avengers are not individually unique words, and there are other books that also have the title The Avengers More

Bit shite of Marvel not to just promote the film as The Avengers and let anybody asking friends if it's the Brit one be told, no, it's the comic book team up film with "FUCKING IRON MAN ON THE POSTER ON EVERY OTHER BUS STOP IN THE COUNTRY" Or sum shit like dat. The Genuine Article
jefmac69, I'm afraid that you're wrong. That's the new HULK. It's styled to look like Mark Ruffalo. It looks nothing like the 15ft HULK from Ang Lee's movie. It's not even the same shade of green. If you look at the top of Helen O'Hara's article it states very clearly that the source of this news article is DISNEY. As MARVEL STUDIOS is part of THE WALT DISNEY COMPANY we can safely assume that this news is 100% genuine. More

@jefmac69 Seems legit to me. Lots of other news sites have the "US" version, still called "The Avengers". Other than that it's the same poster. Scrap that, I've changed my mind. This poster is merely a composite of all the original film's posters. The Thor suit is wrong, The Iron Man suit is wrong, The Hulk picture is from the Ang Lee version, and all the others seem to have come from other posters. Photoshop Mastery
This kind of looks like a joke to me - however genuine it actually is - as this can truly be described as one of the most badly designed movie posters in history! Photoshop mastery is aint. If you look (not very) carefully, you can see that every character is looking in a completely random direction, and know hulk is a lot bigger than everyone else but does it not seem that his proportions look daft? As for the title? Doubt it's true. So ridiculous it's laughable! Ominous signs for th More

If it's called "Avengers Assemble", why does it still say "Marvel's The Avengers" in the credit block? I'd assumed that was a legal dodge for just calling it "The Avengers", which presumably whoever made the '90s film still has some rights to as a title. More
