Joe Carnahan's Got A Death Wish
He's been hired for the remake

Joe Carnahan's Got A Death Wish

Like a dormant volcano waiting to erupt in a shower of blood-soaked lava, the Death Wish franchise has slumbered, occasionally nudging the seismic news--o–meters. Now there are real rumblings, with word that Joe Carnahan has been hired to write and direct a new take on Michael Winner's 1974 original (and Brian Garfield's novel).

Winner's film saw Charles Bronson assume the soon-to-be-iconic role of Paul Kersey, a liberal architect type who turns trigger-happy vigilante when his wife and daughter are brutally attacked. Swearing vengeance on criminal scum everywhere, he stalks the streets of New York taking out his victims.

Highly controversial and not exactly what you might call subtle, the film nevertheless sparked a wave of cinematic copycats and nudged the current action movie genre to ever more violent ends.

Four sequels were pumped out across the next 20 years, but eventually things came to a grinding halt with 1994's Death Wish V: The Face Of Death.

Back in 2007, Sylvester Stallone, then high on successfully bringing back Rocky and getting set to release the latest Rambo, had his eye on a Death Wish remake, with Terminator 3: Rise Of The Machines writers Michael Ferris and John Brancato writing the script. They had plans for a franchise, but that never happened.

MGM and Paramount now have the rights, and Carnahan is the man they want to breathe new life into the bullet-ridden idea. He'll write and direct the new version, though there's no word on when he'll get to it, as his schedule is already crammed with likely movies. And because he's just seen The Grey top the box office charts in the US, chances are he might try to use that heat to ignite one of his long--gestating passion projects such as White Jazz. He's also setting up to make Killing Pablo

Benicio Del Toro or Mickey Rourke as Kersey
The original Death Wish could be improved upon as its quite dated now and no classic, although there are good moments in it. There HAS to be a Jeff Goldblum cameo, this time as a mugging victim (Goldblum played one of the muggers in the original Death WIsh and another one in the Bronson movie St Ives). More

Hmm I think Lian Neeson would be a good fit for the role yes, I think though they have already remade this film a few years ago with Jodie Foster. More

They have made two films already so why not go for the hat trick? They should get Liam Neeson to be the new Charles Bronson. The Taken Liam would be awesome. More

RE: Joe Carnahan's Got A Death Wish
Personally I think Carnahan is a good match for a Death Wish remake. Narc proved he can do a tough and gritty crime thriller. More

Why??
Oh God no, please, leave it alone, why anothe remake? Death Wish is a good film, it's got some very strong scenes in there so you know a remake will be watered down and probably totally different, just cashing in on the name "Death Wish". Come up with a new story, come on! More

RE: Joe Carnahan's Got A Death Wish
The Charles Bronson film though a minor classic of seventies exploitation cinema imho is all about being a vehicle for Bronson's granite faced stoicism and it pretty much skips over the transition from victim to avenging angel so Winner and Charlie can get straight down to the neo fascist rabble rousing and offing a line up of filthy scumbags. It's a film that appeals to all our lowest common denominator feelings, especially for men I think.    The book (which I act More

FFS No, No, No, No, NO! Just leave it alone! Nobody could possibly hope to fill the shoes of the great Charlie Bronson, so don't even try! Hollywood come up with some original ideas instead of rehashing/remaking/reimagining much loved classics. What's next for the remake treatment, Sam Worthington as Dirty Harry?? More

Not sure!
Okay, Death Wish is the iconic film it is because of Charles Bronson, he was an awesome action star/actor but apart from his presence it was a pretty average film and Death Wish 2 is better. So a remake may be a good idea but with no Bronson they need to be very careful with selection to cast Paul Kersey. Please no Liam Neeson again! More
